NEIL SHAW: My name is Neil Shaw.
I grew up in a very small town in Pennsylvania called
Susquehanna.
At a really young age, I realized I wanted to be a
musician so I endeavored to move back to New York as soon
as I could.
I was going to move in and the landlord said, you have a
piano, it's a deal breaker.
You can't move in.
I said, oh, I've had a piano my whole life, it's
never been a problem.
I'll make sure it's cool.
I'll even sound proof the room if you need.
And he was like soundproof the room and we can do this.
The same approach I've had to this studio is make what I
need if I can.
It's a 6 by 11 room, maybe slightly bigger than that
originally, but now I think it's 6 by 11.
One of the pieces that I did build is this
analog summing box.
And when I got more serious about recording, I realized,
hey, there's this debate between analog summing and
digital summing.
And I wanted to figure out what that was
all about for myself.
So I ran a quick test with a mixer and I liked the results,
so I decided to build my own.
So I've got eight channels coming out of this patch bay
from Pro Tools.
Those eight channels going in here.
These eight channels of this patch bay are connected to my
analog summing box.
The outputs of the summing box come out here, and they're
going into--
back into this Avalon.
The stereo mix is having the gain made up by this guy.
And again, it's great.
This is such a clean pre-amp because it's versatile enough
to record with but also to then sum with.
So eight channels coming out of Pro Tools, two channels
going back in.
This guy is just--
it really took my production up a notch.
It's all housed behind this very vintage plate I got on
eBay for like 20 or 30 bucks.
I just wanted to put it in something cool.
I get a lot of fulfillment knowing that it's something I
made and it's perfect for my setup.
