Hurricane Beatriz inundates parts of Mexico, then moves out to sea. As Hurricane Beatriz
struck off the coast of Mexico on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, heavy rains and strong winds
caused some landslides, flooding and fallen trees. Three family members lost their lives
as two tried to save the third from drowning, and the body of a teen who went missing on
Tuesday was found perished Wednesday in waters where he had tried to cross a swiftly flowing
river. Damage overall, however, was considered minimal, and the hurricane dissipated over
the Pacific Ocean as it moved away from the coast without making landfall. Mexico's National
Water Commission head, Jose Luis Luege Tamargo, noted that the rain itself was considered
beneficial, and was being welcomed in many areas as the end to a long drought.
As we send our sympathies for the lives lost to the storm, we join the Mexican people in
thankfulness for the rain. Our prayers that such extreme conditions are minimized as we
work to stabilize the climate through our more eco-friendly actions
