"Server Energy Conservation through Operations Management"
Hello,my name is Mori, and I work for NEC in Japan.
NEC has been promoting several approaches
to energy conservation.
I'd like to introduce one of NEC's green technologies,
"Server Energy Conservation through Operations Management."
NEC's "Express5800 series" servers can
precisely monitor and control workloads using remote management software
that comes standard with the servers.
This management software, called "ESMPRO5",
monitors basic server tasks such as operating conditions, temperature,
and fan speed
in addition to measuring energy consumption by the hour, minute, and second.
The measured data is visualized to understand energy use
so that you can use the data to improve operations.
Express5800 servers also support a "Power Capping" function,
which enables setting an upper limit on the server’s power use,
as well as an "On-off Scheduling" function,
which pauses the target server for a specified period of time.
I will now demonstrate
energy-efficient server operations,
starting with the power capping function.
This chart shows big differences in energy use across time zones.
Even though the total energy consumption looks normal,
the energy use during peak hours is particularly high.
Now, let's control power during peak hours not to exceed the preset value.
I will set the power limit on the server,
which is currently running approximately at 160W, so it doesn't exceed 130W.
First, click this remote control tab and select "Non-Critical Power Capping."
Then, enter the maximum power consumption value of 130W.
The customized value is applied,
and the server is now running at 130W.
This power capping function limits power consumption
and is effective for managing server operations especially
when energy savings are needed.
The "On-off Scheduling" function enables additional options for energy-efficient operations.
In this chart, you see in which time zones servers are consuming more energy.
By selecting on/off actions from the calendar in the management screen,
you can schedule server operations to run/shutdown.
NEC's server operations management technology enables you to control power consumption more efficiently
by reducing energy your servers use.
NEC helps you operate your office and datacenter with greater energy efficiency and conservation.
