Have you ever wondered what your viewers actually take away from your videos? Or been interested in getting their feedback?
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to engage your viewers by adding surveys and quizzes to your Camtasia Studio videos.
Before we get started, there are a couple housekeeping things you should know.
The first is that the minimum video dimensions required for quizzing are 640x480.
so make sure that you meet the dimension requirements before you start working.
The second is that you should finish all of your other editing before adding quizzes to your video.
This keeps you from having to adjust your quizzes repeatedly as you make other edits.
Alright, let’s get started.
Rather than being treated as separate pieces of media on the timeline, quizzes are attached to either the timeline or a piece of media.
When you’re ready to add a quiz, click on the view icon here and select Show Quiz view. You can also use the hotkey CTRL + Q.
When the Quiz view is open, this area is displayed. All of the quiz thumbnails for your video live here.
You’ll also see these bars above the timeline and above each piece of media on the timeline.
This is where you’ll add your quizzes.
If you hover between the timeline and the Quiz view you’ll see a red diamond appear.
Click anywhere in this space to create a timeline quiz.
You can also use the hotkey Q to add a timeline quiz at the playhead.
Once you create a quiz, you can move it around to any point on the timeline.
If you hover in the bar above a media clip on the timeline you’ll see a pink diamond appear.
Clicking here will add a media quiz in the quiz view. This type of quiz is pinned to the media so if you move the media, the quiz goes with it.
Let’s move on to editing quizzes. Both timeline and media quizzes are edited the same way,
and will appear the same to your viewers.
When you add a quiz, Camtasia opens the Quizzing tab for you.
Let’s start by naming the quiz we just created. This name will appear at the top of the quiz window in your final video.
Next, if you want to receive graded quiz results for your video make sure you check this box.
If you’d like to allow viewers to see how they did on the quiz, keep this box checked.
Don’t worry, this won’t allow them to fix their answers, just review them.
Now let’s add some questions. Camtasia automatically includes one default question.
First, you’ll want to open this dropdown menu to pick a question type.
Questions can be multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer and True/False.
Next, click this text and start typing to replace the Default Question Text with the actual question.
The available Answer options will depend on the Question type.
For a multiple choice question, click here to update the Default answer choice, and then continue to enter additional choices
by clicking here, typing the answer, and pressing Enter to set it.
If you check the “Score Quiz” box, be sure to indicate which answer is correct.
Add as many questions as you want using the Add question button.
To go back and edit a question later, just click on it from this list here.
Once you add all of your questions, you can preview the quiz to see how it looks.
It will open in your default browser and you can test it out.
The rest of the quiz options are set when you produce the video.
Let’s look at the production settings you’ll need to make your quizzing function smoothly.
Go ahead and select Produce and share.
There are multiple production options that support quizzing.
These include Share to Screencast.com, both MP4 with video player options,
and the Custom production settings - providing you choose the Flash MP4 with HTML 5 fallback option.
These other formats do not support quizzing.
Once you pick an option, you’ll want to continue through the Production Wizard until you get to the Quiz Reporting options.
In the Quiz Reporting options, you can choose to receive quiz results using SCORM, through email, or both.
You can also leave both options unchecked if you don’t want to receive quiz results.
If you choose to receive quiz results through email, simply enter your email address and
indicate whether or not you need to identify your viewers.
Then, on days your viewers fill out the quizzes, you’ll receive an email with the results.
The first time you create a quiz or survey, you may want to adjust the Quiz appearance by clicking this button.
Here, you can change all of labels for the buttons that appear in your Quizzes, including the ‘Take quiz now,’ ‘Replay last section,’
‘View answers,’ ‘Continue,’ ‘Previous,’ ‘Next,’ and ‘Submit Answers’ button.
This is especially useful if you’re creating a survey rather than a Quiz.
For example, you may want to change the ‘Take quiz now’ button to ‘Take survey now’ to help viewers understand.
Any changes you make here will apply to all of the quizzes in your video.
In addition, any changes you make will be saved for future quizzing videos, so you don’t have to change these options every time.
When you’re done, click OK. Then, continue through the rest of the production wizard and select finish to produce your video.
As soon as your video is live on screencast.com or your own hosting site, your quiz will be active and ready to use.
Select the quiz link below to try out a sample quiz for yourself.
