Are you looking for information about how to get a green card through the adjustment
of status process?
Hello! My name is Kimberley Schaefer and I'm an immigration attorney at the Schaefer Law
Firm in Boise, Idaho. This video will give you an overview of the adjustment of status
process.
Adjustment of status is a way to get a green card while in the United States. If you qualify
for adjustment of status, you won't need to travel overseas for a visa interview.
Instead, you'll be able to do a green card interview at an immigration office near where
you live in the United States.
Many people who get their green cards based on being married to a United States citizen
get their green cards through the adjustment of status process.
How long does it take to get a green card through adjustment of status?
Depending on where you live, the entire process could take as little as two to three months,
but this is unusual. Most cases take between four to six months. If there are unusual issues
in your case, the process could take a year or more.
How much does adjustment of status cost? The government filing fees for one person are
generally $1,490.
You'll also need to pay the cost of a medical exam. You may also need to pay to smaller
costs such as the cost of passport photos.
If you hire an immigration attorney, you will also need to pay her attorney's fee.
Before you fill out any forms or submit anything to the government, please first make sure
that you qualify for adjustment of status.
If you apply but do not qualify, you not only will lose your application fees but you may
also face deportation. Not everyone qualifies for adjustment of status, which is why it
is important to make sure that you qualify before you begin the process.
