Each person can change something
in their area.
I truly believe that.
I think people who attended TED
didn’t quite know what they would find.
TED was very intense. You had people from several areas,
totally willing to listen,
to change, and to do their part, somehow.
I am part of the architecture team
in the project of the first sustainable sports center in Brazil.
This center will be implemented at the Arlindo Rossi square, in Brooklin.
It is a very degraded, a very abandoned area.
And the idea is turning this space into a leisure center.
An area for gatherings, in a great showcase about the materials,
about the sustainable methods for visitors and for users.
To erase this image that it has now,
of abandonment and decadence.
Here are the homes of the people who still live here.
These are pretty old houses.
So the idea is integrating these people too.
We cannot ignore the lives these people have.
In order to be sustainable, any enterprise has to be
environmentally correct,
economically viable, and culturally accepted.
And also socially fair.
And even the materials must be analyzed,
the life cycle of that material,
where it came from, how it was extracted,
how it is transported.
So, this concept is twisted.
You can’t take, I see this a lot,
flooring companies, they are all eco-friendly,
but they ignore the origin of the floors, that come from deposits,
and destroy the environment, like all the transportation of this material.
For example, all the wood used here
is demolition wood, which is reused wood.
The paint he used here is earth-based paint,
it has no solvents, which is also very nice.
It collects water from the rain,
so, under the floor, there’s a cistern.
But these are small changes
that people can begin implementing at their homes.
I believe that, with all we are going through,
all the environmental problems,
people will increasingly begin
to do their part, somehow.
So, if you have the opportunity to make
small changes to the place where you live,
where you work, that will always be welcome.
The idea is for that to be a part of people’s day,
at home, at work.
I think that when that happens, things will start flowing.
Wanted:
new ways to move things;
brighter houses;
jobs that have not yet been invented;
business that generate more than profits;
simple people discovering their importance;
a better world for our children,
and better children for our world.
In 2010, we can make all of that happen.
Let’s do it together?
