Garmin Montana sunlight readability
compared to Garmin Zumo 660
Hey, this is not a Garmin Montana!
That's right. You're watching the Zumo 660
In this video it's about comparing the sunlight readability of the Zumo versus Montana
This is the Zumo 660
and this is the Montana
this montana has the optional Garmin screenprotector placed...
... meant to improve sunlight readability....
... reducing the screen 'glare'
as you can see quite clearly...
sunlight readability of both is ...
almost exactly the same..
However.....
... the question is if you should really use this screenprotector
Because....
... once removed....
.... this is what you get
you can clearly see difference in reflection
this is the Zumo..
.... a bit blurred
While the Montana shows a
.. eh.... cameraman.....
that seems not ok...
but in reality it maybe is not a problem....
we´ll see more of that soon...
... during a short testride
but first... let´s look at mounting
this is the zumo cradle with the well known contacts in the active unit
and the button for releasing the unit
a proven concept that returns in the Montana Cradle
as you can see it´s a bit larger...
with a cover for the contacts
which you can easily lift and place in the cradle
and here also: the sockets holding the device
as said: it's all a bit 'heavier' than with the Zumo
but bear in mind the Montana is especially suited...
for the heavier conditions like off road
placing the unit is the same as with the Zumo660
just place it, push it and it clicks into place
same for the 660....
and the two are happy together again
and yes: you can remove them too ;-)
important to notice:
push the Montana far enough..
so the button on top totally 'sinks in'
you can use the included screwdriver
to have some extra security..
oh well...
enough said about mounting...
it's time to get some gas
and after that...
we are finally ready for a ride!
and then you immediately notice....
the quite irritating reflection
showing my bad habit to even smoke while riding... ;-)
However...
after a while you realize...
that this reflection is not so irritating at all..
since readability seems to be better...
than the Zumo 660
it all depends on lighting conditions....
how strong is the sunlight
from which side is it coming..
here, in an open area...
with the sun in front
the zumo is difficult to read..
and here also the Montana clearly is the winner.
ride along with me
and see for yourself...........
.... my personal preference is totally clear
I feel the Montana, despite the reflection...
clearly is the winner of the two..
and the screenprotector...
it makes the Montana almost the same as the Zumo 660
but it's totally obsolete...
... the Montana without screenprotector..
has a clear advantage to the 660
which itself was quite ok already
back to the device....
the screen setting I used
.. is the screen that is familiair from the Zumo
but the Montana offers a lot of different 'dashboards'
for example: the data-fields
if you are familiiar with the Streetpilot-series
but also if you know the Zumo 660....
you will know you can position the data-fileds on the right...
it often brings a calmer image on the screen
but...
we know the Montana is a five legged sheep
so it has lt has a lot of extra options..
For the circuit-drivers...
there even is the stopwatch fuction
so you can keep track of your lap-times
are you going for a ride in the mountains...
.... it might be nice to be able to...
.. continiously watch your height-profile...
.. making the 'distance to next turn' less important
a similar option is the dashboardsetting 'compass'
an intesting option in general...
... but especially for the off-roader.
.. oh well.... there are many, many options in the Montana
... often not even meant for motorcycle use
but don't forget: the Montana..
is a real multi-purpose device..
.. but one of the possibilities that really appeals to me
.. is the ability to use favorites
at this time the column on the right is empty...
.. you will have to choose which ones to use...
but i already made a selection...
showing that you can build your own menu
on the main screen...
all depending on which choice you use frequently..
sometimes those are a bit hard to find
but now you can partly design your own interface
and place important options on a higher level
so you can go there with just one click
one of the options is the 3D view of the map
not very important, but still a nice feature
and, quite nice as well....
... while driving showing a detailed view of your heigt profile..
but also the photo-camera....
if this is usefull highly depends on how you mount the device
the camera is on the lower right side of the gps
but IF you find a good mountingplace you are able to take pictures while riding..
.. and of course you can mark a waypoint
and you can easily adjust your settings so that....
... while on the road you can quickly look for a gas-station..
.. that's where we started... ... that's where we end...
for now that concludes the Garmin Montana...
