I'm Johnny from ExpertBoxing.
Right now I'm going to show you some tips
to increase the power of your uppercut punches.
The first tip when it comes to throwing uppercuts
I always think about my hip and my elbow.
The hip and the elbow position is crucial.
Ok, first with the hip
You need the hip to be under the uppercut and to support it
so your hip is out here, it's not under the uppercut
This is not a very powerful uppercut.
Ok, you need it here.
You need to get this hip as close as you can under it.
so instead of here
maybe here is better ok,
or on this side on my right side
maybe, you know, here is better.
This is going to be a weak uppercut.
This is going to be a little bit more powerful
because I have my hip under.
Now for the elbow
you want your elbow to really get under the uppercut.
Make sure it gets under and
the elbow follows the fist and supports the fist.
If you're throwing an unsupported uppercut
let's say I'm throwing an uppercut like this and the elbow is here
it's not really that much more powerful.
If I can I want to get my elbow under
and along with my hip
so you'll see I'm trying to draw a line
between the fist, the elbow, the hip and the foot.
Ok, here
ok, and I'll show you from this angle. All right?
So, hip and elbow. Very crucial.
Huge point. Huge, huge, huge point.
The next thing you want to do is
you want to imagine that the uppercut
has a big load
with a very tight shot.
It's a very tight pop.
So I'm going to show you the example
of a big load with a tight pop.
So right here, I'm loading up
and then bom!
It's very tight.
Ok, or you may see pros, they're here
and they're loading up and...Bom!
Ok.
whoosh, whoosh
Ok, that's what it is.
What you don't want is a
a small load and...whoosh
and you throw a tight pop. It's not that.
It's not this and then...
You know, just here and
Bom!
So it's a lot of body motion
to get into a very small, tight, compact shot.
Ok, or here and...woosh woosh...woosh.
Big load, tight shot
Not small load, big shot.
So, play with that.
Third tip: when you throw the uppercut,
pull down the back of the reverse side.
So if I'm throwing a left uppercut
Take this right shoulder. Pull it down.
Ok? Like this
Don't just fly up with it.
Pull down this side...woosh!
As if the shoulder coming around
will help you push the uppercut up.
Same thing. When I throw a right uppercut
I imagine the shoulder comes down.
Ok, just imagine.
I don't mean literally to expose your face like that
just imagine it.
And those are some great powerful tips for the uppercut.
Give them a try, let me know.
