Hi, I’m Kerri.
And I’m Dave, and this is EW’s TV Recaps for April 1st.
Last night was the series finale of How I Met Your Mother --
Or as most of us longtime fans felt watching it,
How I Met Your MOTHER F*****!
Ugh, Kerri, I’m so mad.
I feel like the writers betrayed our trust.
From the beginning, this show’s been based on this
Premise that we’re following Ted’s quest for true love,
And that the mother is his soul mate.
Season 1, Episode 1, we’re told that’s not Robin.
Now in Season 9, we finally meet the mother.
She’s perfect for Ted, even though her name is Tracy.
And then in the finale - BOOM - the mother’s dies, and
Ted actually ends up with Robin.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?
I just don’t understand what the writers want us to feel right now.
Should we feel happy that they ended up together?
We stopped rooting for Ted and Robin a long time ago!
We even watched him physically let her go like a giant Canadian
balloon into the sky in a recent episode!
Ted and Robin have tried to make it work
time and time again but they are just WAY too different.
Right! And this entire final season was spent
Conditioning us to root for Barney and Robin by
SETTING IT ON THE DAY OF THEIR WEDDING.
Episode after episode of Barney and Robin questioning their bond,
And coming back to the fact that they loved and trusted one another -
FOR WHAT? They divorced.
It’s like the writers didn’t have confidence in their own storytelling,
or in the audience’s ability to accept anyone for Ted but Robin,
and felt the need to pigeonhole us back into the pilot.
They just jam-packed SO much into this final hour:
Barney and Robin getting divorced,
Marshall becoming a judge,Ted having kids,
Barney becoming a dad, Ted’s wife getting sick AND DYING.
That all would have made for a great SEASON,
NOT A FINAL EPISODE.
Yes! Knowing this ending, I get why they didn’t
Show us much of the mother this season.
They didn’t want us to get attached.
But THEN WHY NAME THE SHOW AFTER HER CHARACTER.
Why not name it something more appropriate.
Like How I Met Your Step-Mother.
OR How I Met the Woman I Was Meant to Be With and
Couldn’t Make it Work So I Fell in Love with a
Bunch of Other Women Who Weren’t Good For Me
Until I Met Your Mother and She Was Nice and
All But Then She Died Blah Blah
Let’s Get Back to Robin!
Can we get that hashtag?
If we had spent the entire season getting to know the mother and watching
this amazing relationship blossom between her and Ted,
I STILL would have been OK if they killed her off at the end,
As long as the show ended THERE.
Yeah, that would have been sad, but it wouldn’t
Have been as cold and cruel as Ted’s kids basically being like,
“No Dad, this isn’t a story about Mom! This is a
story about how you totally love Aunt Robin! Go ask her out!”
I know we’ve spent a lot of time *** about this finale,
But there was one thing that I really loved about it,
And that’s how it took Barney having a baby to finally become a man.
That was a sweet moment, but I was too distracted
To really pay attention because I can’t believe
That they haven’t renovated MacLaren's Pub in like, 20 years.
What did you guys think of the series finale?
Sound off in the comments!
And they never told us what happened between Ted and the pineapple!!
JESUS CHRIST, YOU GUYS!
