Welcome back, I am going to continue making my V8 engine here, the MiniV8 engine
Now that I have the engine block and pistons all made
I am going to make some connecting rods
They are made out of this flat brass bar, or they will be anyway.
I have attached it to a small piece of wood, to give extra support as I cut it out
and to give me something to hold on to
I haven't really
cut something out or that many of something out that is that small and detailed
before
lt will be a bit on the challenging side
I have made some pilot holes to put the blade through
rather than
cutting it in from the sides
that will help the peace mental hold its structure together as I cut the little
pieces out
the connecting rod cut of from the brass very nicely, very easily
uh... much easier than i thought they would
I tried to cut it out from one side to the other
never cutting through
the ends and stuff to keep as much of the piece of brass
intact
to give support as a cut them out
once they are cut out I am just use a small sanding disk
in my drill press to sand off the ends and parts that stick up
and I should have a pretty good set of connecting rods
I have done a bunch of sanding, shaping on the ends
just verify that they all
fit appropriately
on the pistons
so the uh...
connecting rods
should work out pretty good
now it am going to move on to
doing the pieces of the crank shaft
I am going to make that out of a little thicker
brass bar
attach that to the plywood like before
and cut it out
I used a brad tip drill bit to with it
and just kind of used that to center punch
or make a divot in the
the brass
to guide my 16th inch drill bit when I drill through through
otherwise it will have a tendency to wander on the metal
here is the crankshaft web all cut out
and uh...
sanded up
I will be making the crankshaft out of this stainless steel rod here, it is a 16th of an
inch
but first we need to make some spacers to keep thing all lined up
between ah
the pieces
so for that am going to make some small plastic washers
for the spacer I just used some scrap plastic
drill some holes in
I made a small tube
kinda tapered and roughed the end a little bit
just kind of eying it up there
they don't really have to be perfect
I will just get a stick to push that out
we will see how they come out
finished
look a little something like that
that will go
nicely on the crankshaft
I have my template here for the crankshaft
I am basically just going to wrap tape around the shaft
putting in a vise
make marks with a
marker on the tape where I am going to cut it off and cut it off with a grinding disk
I am starting to assemble it
it is hard to focus on
something this small
basically
stacking spaces in like that
connecting rods
and basically
tapping these pieces together right now
with a small hammer
and they're actually coming together pretty tight so
at least for the initial run
it is just going to be tapped together
and see how it goes
I thought I might try super glue because a lot of times that binds metal pretty good.
but it doesn't look like i will need it.
just keep stacking and assembling the crankshaft like so
it took a bit to get crankshaft together
this is my intended layout here
it is not perfect but probably good enough to work
I have attached the crankshaft here
it's not working so well
couple issues
this piston is bottoming out
which is a bit of an issue, this can
needs to come over here a hair this way
to the right
that is the kind of the problem making something this small with the kind of tools
I have
I should have give myself a little more room for error in the design
maybe made the engine block a hair longer
that would have
I only have room for
3/64" error
inch error
at the end of the stroke, could have left a little more room in there movement
but i do have roughly 1/16 of an inch inch
that I can sand off the bottom of the piston
so if bringing this over slightly one way doesn't help
shortening the piston might
it is also binding a bit
but uh... a little lubrication will probably take of that
so hopefully in the next video
I will have the engine running
thanks for watching
