Hi, John Kaulfus, Dean of Students at Texas A&M University-Commerce
My leadership tip of the week is to be prepared
Great leaders are prepared
Abraham Lincoln once said give me six hours to chop down a tree
and I'll spend four hours sharpening my axe. So to me there are three key elements
to being prepared. The first is to know who your people are
you need to know their limitations, you need to know their strengths, you need to
know their biases
you really get to know the people that you're leading. The second element that I
think in really important being prepared is to know the culture.
is to know the environment that you're being a leader in. You need to know what the
state laws are, you need to know what the policies and procedures are,
you really need to be very involved in the culture, understand the culture
understand the environment in which the people you're leading are working.
And then the final thing that I really think is most important is that leaders
have prepared goals
that they have bought into and that the people they're leading have bought into.
So if they have their goals in place, they know where they're going,
they're focused, and they come into any leadership situation prepared,
then I think they'll be very successful. So my leadership tip
for all leaders is be prepared.
