August 12 2008, Neil Diamond played the first of four sold-out nights at Madison Square
Garden in New York.
August 13 1965, Jefferson Airplane made their live debut at San Francisco's Matrix Club.
August 14 1956: Bob Rickman, a Washington DC disc jockey, forms "The Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Elvis Presley." Rickman was protesting negative press coverage of
Elvis that painted Elvis as a talentless, sex crazed monster. Rudolph Bing of the Metropolitan
Opera Company was quoted as saying: "Elvis Presley is a vulgar, tasteless amateur ... I
find this no laughing matter." Well, turns out the joke was on you Rudy!
August 15 1969, The first day of the three day Woodstock Festival was held on Max Yasgur's
600 acre farm in Bethel outside New York. Attended by over 400,000 people, the event
featured, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone, Johnny Winter, Jefferson
Airplane, Mountain, and just about every other huge rock act of the late 60s. Happy 44th
birthday to the two babies that were born there!
August 16 1997, Will Smith began a four-week stay at No.1 on the UK singles chart with
'Men In Black' taken from the film of the same name. Will won the 1997 Grammy for Best
Rap Solo Performance for the song.
August 17 1998: Carlos Santana is awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
August 18 1945, Born on this day, Sarah Dash, Labelle. Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Sarah,
or Happy Birthday!
