Today we are going to learn
Lesson 11 of Voyage of Vocabulary Value the Vocabs with
Vital Photographs, Story, and Mnemonics
Levee means earthen or stone embankment built to prevent flooding
Levee = = Limit - Embankment + Vain - Enhancement
= = Limit the Level of water by means of an embankment to make the enhancement or overflow vain (prevented)
the synonyms for levee are dam, causeway, breakwater, earthwork
Confused word to be known: levy means an act of levying or imposing a tax fee or fine
As the River rose and threatened to overflow the levee emergency workers
rushed to reinforce the walls with sandbags
Inundate means overwhelm or flood.
The officer was inundated with a lot of works and the piles of files and paperwork flooding his desk.
it also means Overburden, Overload, Overpower, Besiege, Swamp
Streets have been turned into river where torrents of water inundated
the area and cars have been inundated by the flood water.
it also means Flood, Deluge, Overflow, Submerge, Overrun, Swamp
Inundate = = In + Un + Date = Infinitely + United + Update i.e overrun or overburden or overflow of something
Strut means a supporting bar
Strut = = Str + ut = = Straight Nut to get supported
...e.g. The steel sheet is fastened on the floor by the nut with a bolt to enhance the support for straight bar
standing on the floor.
Prop or Buttress
The aluminum strut.....the aluminum strut works perfectly as the supporting bar for the headphone that
holds the headset stably and finely.
Mitigate means to make something bad less severe, serious, or painful
Mitigate = = Minimize the Gate = = Mini-Gate = =
Make a gate minimize by height....Make a gate minimized by height so that less
thing (risk) can pass through
the synonyms for mitigate are Appease , Moderate, Palliate, Alleviate, Reduce, Extenuate, Diminish
The businessmen’s hand is mitigating the risk of wooden tiles to follow the trend of domino effect
falling down altogether. i.e. the risk has been mitigated
Metamorphosis means change or change of form
Metamorphosis = = Meta (denoting a change of position) + Morphosis (means to undergo or cause to
undergo a gradual process of transformation) = change of form
it also means Transformation , Mutation, Transfiguration, Change, Alteration, Modification
The metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly is typical of many such
changes in animal life which is the process of transformation from an
immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Quiescent
or Quiescent means in a state or period of inactivity or dormancy at rest; temporarily inactive
Quiescent = = Quiet + Scent = Quiet in Sense = = motionless
it also means dormant, inert, inactive, motionless, stagnant, or quiet
While the cat is quiescent in the morning time it is overactive in the rest of the day.
Plummet means to fall sharply or steeply
Plummet = Plunge (fall suddenly and uncontrollably) like a Comet
the synonyms for plummet are plunge, tumble, sink, or descend
Stock price... stock prices plummeted as Wall Street reacted to the rise in interest rates
Sporadic means occurring irregularly or occasionally
Sporadic = = Scattered & Periodic i.e. Opposite of Periodic = Opposite of regular occurrence
i.e. Occurring irregularly
sporadic also means infrequent, irregular, desultory, uneven, or occasional
Steve’s ECG (Electrocardiography) reports made the doctor anticipating, on the basis of his sporadic
or irregular heartbeat, that he could suffer from arrhythmias engendering an irregular heartbeat.
Indeterminate means not exactly known established are defined or not clearly fixed
it also means uncertain, indefinite or indefinite, undetermined, undefined,
unspecified, unfixed, unpredictable, obscure, or unknown
Indeterminate = Inept (incompetent) to be Determinate (Determined)
= = not clearly certain, defined, or fixed i.e. undetermined
Tug-of-War: tug-of-war is a contest in which two teams pull at opposite ends of
a rope until one drags the other over a central line.
In the tug-of-war it is indeterminate to anticipate the winning side without waiting till the end
because the victory depends on the sustained strength of each team.
Penury means the state of being very poor or extreme poverty
Penury = = Pensive (thoughtful) Poverty
it also means impoverishment, indigence,
destitution.....destitution, poverty, or pauperism
When Marilyn lost all her money in gambling and her pension fund failed, she was forced to live in penury
i.e. she ended her days in extreme poverty
Deterrent means something that discourages
Deterrent = = Discourage the Entrants
i.e. something that discourages a person or group that enters or takes part in something
it also means hindrance, impediment, disincentive, discouragement, brake, curb, or restraint
The roadside signs inform that dangerous curves are to be appeared ahead and urge to slow down the car that
is the curves are deterrent to the people so that they are to be discouraged
driving fast or reckless through these tortuous road of the countryside.
Occlude means to stop, close up, or obstruct
it also mean.....it also means
Shut, Slam, Obdurate, Cumber, or Impede
Occlude = = Obviously Conclude i.e. stop or close
The authority closed the main gate of the school with a view to occluding the entry of the riot
breaking out on the ground.
Obviate means make unnecessary, prevent problem, or avoid something undesirable
Obviate = = Obvious to eliminate & Deviate
i.e. prevent a problem by deviating from the situation to make the problem unnecessary
obviate also means preclude, prevent, avert, avoid, foreclose, eliminate, debar, forefend
The organized routines can help anyone to obviate and prevent the problems of daily activities.
The foot over-bridge has been constructed so that people can utilize the way obviating any kind of
unexpected accidents while they need to cross the railway
Compliant means meeting or in accordance with
rules and standards; conforming to requirements
it also means acquiescent, amenable, yielding, tractable, complaisant, or adaptable
Compliant = = Com means willing to please....Complaisant...Complaisant (willing to please others or to
accept what they do or say without protest) + Pliant (easily influenced or directed; yielding)
i.e. Compliant means Complaisant and Pliant; or conforming to the requirements
One needs to be compliant enough with a view to
maintaining the respective and relevant rules, regulations, law, standards, requirements and policies.
Indigence means a state of extreme poverty or destitution
it also means impoverishment, indigence, penury, poverty, or pauperism
Indigence = = In + digence (digest) = = Indigestion due to lack of food i.e. poverty
Living in a state of indigence or living in a state of state of indigence
the man from one of the destitute families around the city has
been persuaded two to beg arms for his family sitting on the street.
So indigence means
the state of extreme poverty or destitution
Impede means to delay or prevent something or someone by obstructing them
The traffic police impeded... impeded the car moving onward by giving signal to stop for their regular
investigation purpose.
Impede... means Impedance (or means resistance) i.e.
action to be restrained or prevented
it also means hinder, obstruct, delay, retard, disrupt, brake, obdurate, occlude, or block
Prodigal means wasteful or reckless with money
Mr. Morgan....Mrs. Morgan prodigal
Mrs. Morgan's prodigal habit of spending all her money on most of the of the unnecessary and excess items
goaded her to think that she just went shopping to buy a box of hairpins
Prodigal = = Profuse (very plentiful) dinar (kind of currency or money) to get all (necessary + unnecessary)
reckless with money
Prodigal also means spendthrift.....
spendthrift, thriftless, unthrifty, profligate, extravagant, squanderer, or imprudent
Story: Application of the Learnt Vocabs
As the river rose and threatened to overflow the levee and inundate the ....inundated the area,
emergency workers rushed to the place to reinforce the walls with sandbags as the
strut with a view to mitigating the situation. The sudden metamorphosis of
the river from a tranquil water course to a turbulent one made the riverside business
made the riverside business quiescent for a full two months.
Thus the rate of commercial development plummeted and it was sporadic with respect to the
irregular and indeterminate turbulence of the water of the river.
When the local tradesmen confronted such situation they feared
that they would end their seasonal business in penury.
The situation was so deterrent to generate business in the area on the bank of the river that it
occluded new trades to be emerged. Later, the team of engineers started working to
obviate the problem so that they could compliant with the construction
standards and eliminate those anticipated indigence from the locale
The frugal steps of the engineers eventually impede the ways of any kind of prodigal expenditure.
