It's a race against time for Army National Guard soldiers
as they respond in support of the oil spill affecting the coast of Louisiana.
Specialist Sarah Lupescu reports. [Lupescu] Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave
the order to mobilize a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and 10 to 15
Missouri Guard soldiers. For Sergeant Kirk Orlando, a crew chief with
the 1st of the 106th Assault Helicopter Battalion, this mission
is personal. I grew up pretty much where the oil spill
is coming, so I know the area. I know it's going to be detrimental to the
people that live there. [Lupescu] Another crew chief from the 1st
of the 106th, Sergeant Darrin Davis, explained the Guard's
role in state emergency missions. When you think of the National Guard, this
is what comes to my mind. This is why I joined the Guard--to help ourselves
and help our neighbors.
