Hey everybody, it’s Marisa Murgatroyd, founder of Live Your Message and Superhero Summit. We
are counting down to the Summit. Just go on down on November 4th through 15th and we’ve
got 12 amazing Superheroes over 12 days teaching you 12 cutting edge strategies for more traffic,
leads and sales using social media. And I’m here today with Mia Davies and Mia
is personal friend of mine and she’s pretty incredible. She’s built her entire email
list through video. She’s basically been able to generate up to a hundred leads a day,
just through online video using some of the tactics that she’s going to be teaching
you back on the Summit. She’s got a YouTube channel where 10 videos
are driving about a million views. So Mia knows a thing or two about how to use video
to really make yourself known on social media. So thank you for showing up today, Mia.
Yeah thanks for having me on. Absolutely. So everybody has been talking
about social media and that’s almost a cliché to say how important social media is right
now. And you got people in kind of two different camps – you got the diehard social media
people who are saying, ‘oh my gosh, social media is the new thing, it’s going to replace
email, it’s going to replace having a website, and everyone’s just going to be interacting
on Facebook and Twitter and you don’t need anything other than that.’
And then you got some of the diehard internet marketers who are saying, ‘you know what?
Social media, it doesn’t get results, it doesn’t really convert into sales and I’m
going to stick with my email list for now’. So where are you on that spectrum and what
would you say the role of social media is? That’s a brilliant, brilliant question.
I would say that we need both. Because social media is not a fad, it isn’t a thing that’s
going to come and go and it isn’t something that works or doesn’t work. It actually
the way we communicate, social media is the result of the demand that human beings have
to be connected and also to filter out information that we like in social media because it allows
us to connect with the people we care about and the things we care about and we can see
what the people that we care about are sharing and liking and reposting or whatever. So it
helps us to filter information, it helps us to tune in to what matters to us, it helps
us to stay connected and so social media is where all the conversations are going on.
Everyone’s ideal clients are hanging out on social media and they’re communicating,
they’re looking up things, they’re talking about things. So you want to be leading that
conversation whatever you’re an expert in, you want to be leading that conversation to
people that don’t understand that, its crazy new.
But here’s the other thing about social media, it’s that social media is nothing
else. It’s a place for you to have that trust factor with your clients. So it’s
a way for you to actually be connecting with them, giving them a voice to communicate back
to you, rather than one way communication, like, kind of the old style of advertising
or just like here’s my advertising coming out at you and instead you’re giving the
audience an opportunity to actually have a voice and engage back with you.
Even the biggest corporations and companies are starting to get this now, and you know,
creating that interaction, creating that community, and that’s what people as human beings,
this is a human being element, people need that. They need that connection that trust
can ultimately convert to much more money and much more sales. But you need to understand
that it’s allowing you to connect with your audience, build that trust, build that rapport,
it’s your public reputation in a way it’s the social proof that people can see that
people like you that you’re posting values, that other people are engaging with you. You
have all the social proof through social media and then understanding that you can leverage
that to be able to get more sales, to be able to have more clients, because people will
trust you at a much deeper level. When you understand that, you can have the
best of both worlds, but my goodness, you need an email list. Yes! You need an email
list. You want to convert as many of those social media followers on to your email list
as possible. The need for an email list is not going away because your email list is
how you continually follow up with your people. If you only counted on social media and you
said social media is going to replace your email list, you’re insane. Because last
time I checked, you don’t own your Facebook following. If Facebook decided to shut down
your fan page tomorrow, and they can do that, if they want to stop having your posts be
shown to any of your followers, they can do that too. You don’t own that following.
So that’s powerful. It’s a thing you need to have. But your email list, you own that.
You own that forever. And you can build a meaningful relationship with people. If you
don’t have that email list, then you’re leaving it up to chance, what’s going to
happen to Facebook in two years? I don’t know but I wouldn’t leave that up to chance,
if that, you’re considering that as your email list. That’s crazy!
Did I answer your question? You did. You have some real jems in there.
Now, I’m going to challenge you to say, if you have to have a sound bite version of
that to give to Forbes magazine or CNN or Oprah, what would you say the role is of social
media in a sound bite version? The role of social media is, number one, is
social proof so that people can see that you have followers and see that you’re having
engagement, they see that people know, like and trust you – social proof that’s really,
really powerful. Number two, it gives your audience and voice to communicate back to
you, which creates community, creates engagement, which creates trust, which ultimately leads
to more sales as well. But social media, as you start to add in your web pages into your
post and those different things can lead right into your email list too, which you want to
continue growing because your email list, you own that. Your social media following,
you don’t own that. That’s own by Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and different channels. You
want to own your own email list. That’s never going to change.
Awesome. Thank you so much. And next question is, how has social media specifically transformed
your business? Social media, when I started online, I started
with social media. My first action on the internet was posting a video. That was the
first thing I did. I didn’t even know what I was doing. And I put my phone number, it
was an internet phone number, but I put my phone number next to the video because I thought
I gave a call to action, I put the video and then I said, you know, feel free to call me
or whatever it was. So all I knew was, I wanted to put something out there that would make
a difference for people and create that engagement. So social media has been a part of my business
from day one. That’s actually what had me be interested in coming online was because
I saw this platform where you can share content, and you can start to make a difference for
people out there in the world, and people were responding to that. And I saw power of
that right away. Nice. Awesome. So it sounds like you’ve
been doing this for a while. Yeah.
And so, next question is, so many people, it like they spin in circles when it comes
to social media, they try a bunch of stuff but they don’t really see the return on
investment. So what was your biggest social media fails or something that you tried with
social media that just totally flopped? You know, you asked that question and I was
thinking about it – I couldn’t think of something that absolutely flopped. I mean
we’re all going to have things like you put a video out there and then no commented
on it or liked it, you know like, okay, I guess that didn’t land well or whatever.
I would say that there’s been fail coz I’d even put some stuff out there that stirred
the pot, you could say, right? It gets people talking and has some people may be upset and
there’s opinions going around, and I didn’t even see that as a fail. I saw that as a good
thing coz you know, it’s turned people up, it’s getting people sharing, commenting,
and engaging. I wouldn’t say there’s been a huge fail that only, the only thing I’d
say would be a fail was, maybe in the beginning, all the content I was putting out there and
I wasn’t putting a link with my content so it wasn’t actually driving traffic to
an email list. I mean that’s the only thing I could think of.
Got it. Alright. So when do you think you finally got it with social media and cracked
the code? I know it takes some trial and error to really get it right, but what did you start
to do differently where you really noticed the results or what did you stopped doing?
Okay so I maybe a unique case, okay, because when I started, when I started with social
media, I mean when I started online I started with social media right away. So I don’t
know any other way. I know a lot of these guys did nothing but direct response marketing
or like that early on, but I don’t, I didn’t have that previous training, so when I came
through social media, I mean when I came online I was doing social media right away. Say,
that there was a point when I completely got it? I think from the beginning, I saw it as
a tool that would allow me to connect with the world. And I started to use that right
away. But the biggest thing I could say is that
I picked something early on that I, like a channel, that I wanted to use. And when I
first started it was YouTube. I have multiple YouTube channel but I had multiple YouTube
channels when I started, I was sharing YouTube videos that was my focus, it was all about
video on YouTube, and now my focus has shifted in terms of consistency, it’s like I’m
really big on Facebook, I primarily just focus on Facebook now. But the biggest thing for
me is focusing on at least one channel that really was my place to express and share and
connect and engage rather than trying to do every single social media site out there.
I just, I’ve never tried to do all of them at once.
I have other social media sites, I have my Twitter, I have these different things for
social proof right? But as far as being very, very consistent, I’m not consistent on all
of them, I’m just not. Got it. Awesome. That’s a really good tip
that focusing on one and really do it well and you said as your platform like you said
to express yourself. And what is one kind of cutting edge tip or secret about using
social media to really get that return on investment, to generate those traffic, and
that leads and that sales that not a lot of people know about?
Okay, so this still blows my mind – that you could share a cool a image on Facebook.
We’ve all done it right? You share something cool that inspired you and you share it on
Facebook and everyone loves it and they hit the share button and you end up with like
fifty or a hundred or two hundred shares. All of those shares are people that are sharing
you content, it’s going on to their Facebook page and it’s linking back to your Facebook
page, right? So that’s pre-viral exposure. But here’s the crazy thing, if you just
go ahead and insert your link, into that same, into the description box of that same image,
and post it on Facebook? You’ll still get a lot of people sharing your image, you’ll
get that same viral exposure. But guess what? All those people are sharing your link on
their Facebook page. I think it’s absolutely amazing. It happens every day and a lot of
people don’t even have their link in to their content. So add your link.
Absolutely. Definitely agree with that. And is there any tip that relates more to video?
Like what you’re doing with video and what you’re going to be teaching related to video?
Okay, so video, really I would say, one of the coolest thing you can do with video, is
first of all, you have to be showing up on video in some kind of interval. I don’t
care if you do video once a month, or if you do it once a week, everyday is a little excessive
but like once a month, once a week, something – for you’re taking your presence and
you’re taking it to another level by showing up on video. Do you have to add video in somewhere.
So if we share a video on your Facebook page, Twitter, or whatever your social media channel,
wherever it is you’re really hanging out – integrate video on somewhat of a consistent
interval or consistent basis for you, so that your audience builds that trust and connection
with you at a whole other level, but with video one one thing that I’ve had had the
best results with is uploading a video a directly to Facebook to my Facebook fan page and then
running promoted posts ads to that video. There’s just something about seeing a video
in the right hand side of your Facebook page, it’s very social, it’s very, you know,
very na… *FEED LOST*
Am I cutting out? You did. You cut out just at the very, very
end of that. Yeah, so running promoted posts ads through
video has been really effective. Got it. Victoria actually just shared that
as well, so she’s all about that too with her Facebook ads stuff. Nice. Alright. And
where do you think, in terms of trends, like if you had to share a secret or a tool or
a tip that you think is going to be really hot in 2014, something that’s just going
to be coming in to its own right now, that we might not have seen before or something
that’s kind of new and picking up steam, what would it be?
You know, it’s funny, ‘coz on a Google Hangout and I really think there’s something
really powerful with Google Hangouts. I don’t primarily teach Google Hangouts and I don’t
use them all that much yet, but as far as what I see as the trends? Google Hangouts
are amazing because it’s bringing in that element of connection which is why video’s
powerful. I mean it’s the only reason that video matters – it’s because it allows
us to connect. Google Hangouts is allowing us to do that but in a whole other level.
Here’s the other thing about Google Hangouts, is a lot of the results I’ve produced and
a lot of the leads I’ve generated coming through YouTube videos by ranking them on
YouTube and ranking them on Google. But with Google Hangouts, you can go ahead and get
your keyword list and whatever keywords you’re going to go after, instead of shooting a video
in your studio and uploading it to YouTube and all that, you can actually just record
a Google Hangout, keyword target it and it’ll upload to your YouTube channel but the power
of it it’s because Google owns, because Google created Google Plus, they’re a little
biased, so obviously they love their own product. We’re finding that Google Plus recorded
videos ranked faster than regular videos on YouTube, so you can do your keyword targeted
videos using Google Plus technology and get your videos ranked even faster. This isn’t
something that I’ve actually started doing myself, but that’s something I see coming,
but it’s going to be really, really fast, effective and powerful for entrepreneurs to
start doing. Nice. I love it. Thank you. And tell us a
little bit about what you’re going to be teaching, I know your event is actually the
very, very first day of the Summit on Monday November 4th at 5PM Pacific 8PM Eastern. So
tell us about what you’re going to be teaching, why is it so important and why people should
come? So I’m going to be going through how to
integrate video into everything you’re doing in terms of social media. How to integrate
it into your daily plan or whatever it is that – daily, weekly, monthly – whatever
it is you do with your social media, how to integrate video into that.
Then also how to use a video throughout your funnel, so that you are increasing the trust
of the people and increasing your sale. I would not actually have, let me put it this
way, I wouldn’t have made the kind of money that I’ve made if I didn’t use video the
way that I’ll be showing you guys how to do and it’s because I have a trust level
with people that most people don’t have because they don’t integrate video the same
way. So I’m going to be showing you how to do that.
And then some cool strategies to help you build your list with video as well. So, list
building and then increasing your profit as well with video. That’s what we’ll be
covering. Alright. Sounds amazing can’t wait for it.
Thank you so much for coming out and see you everybody in just a couple of weeks.
Yeah! I’m really excited to be a part of this. I have to acknowledge you too for what
you put together, I get asked to be part of things a lot and I usually say no because
there’s just not enough time in the day and there’s so many things going on. Your
stuff, what you’re putting together with this, first of all when I looked at it, I
knew this was something I’m going to be tuning in every single one of the trainings
and paying close attention and if it’s something that I’m actually going to take the time
out of my schedule to do and learn from, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. So I really
wanted to acknowledge you for the people you brought together, the training you’re bringing
together. I’m excited to be a part of it, but more than that, I’m excited to listen
to everyone else’s presentation and learn from them, so thank you.
Thanks for that. Absolutely. We try to do things a little bit different here at Live
Your Message and Superhero Summit. So thank you for recognizing that and jumping in and
everybody wants to see you in your Catwoman suit.
Woooh! Catwoman! Yeah.
She-Ra was taken. I really wanted to be She-Ra. I know. Victoria got in there ahead of you.
Now I have to be Catwoman. It’s okay, Catwoman’s not so bad. Alright.
See you in a bit! Thanks, bye.
Bye.
