AWS, which is American Welding Society, showed we would be two hundred
thousand welders short
out in the workforce by 2010
graduates out of this program just starting out
they will earn anywhere from sixty to seventy thousand dollars. The average
welder for PG & G
last year
was making a hundred and ten thousand dollars
here at the facility at Butte College we have a welding technology program it runs
nine and a half months and also have a partnership
with PG & E and that's a matter of additional eight weeks of training
at the end of that time period an individual is ready to go work for PG & E
or can enter into the petrol chem
and natural gas pipeline welding industry over the one thing that we have
going for us is that it takes you about two, two and a half years of other
community colleges to do the same thing that we're doing
one school year
you can also earn an A.S. degree here through welding technology
and then of course your certification papers.
We run 8 to 5 five days a week
six hours on saturday within that time period for every hour of lecture you're gonna get four
hours of hands-on
actual skills.
If you choose to do the PG & E partnership you have an extended eight weeks
of time.
You start, come into the program, learn how to do
very minimum welding, stick welding, open arc or oxyacetylene welding, you progress on
to mig welding and tig welding
there you go on into self shielded wire and, uh, duel shielded wire and
at the end of the program you are good enough to get your papers in 6G pipe
which qualifies you for pipe welding and also for structural steel welding
through one inch unlimited and all your pipe welding. Most programs specifically
focus on one type of welding or one type of cert
by getting the cert it'll give the person who leaves here
the fields wide open for where they can go to work cause they already
pretty much papered and certified and all the different aspects of welding. quality
you could specialize in a specific skill but here at the college itself
they have every aspect of welding so if you wanted to be at stick welder you can
come out of the programming a strong stick welder
whereas i went to the program i wanted to be a strong tig welder
so i i went through the program and became a strong tig welder.
so they really offer any specialty that you could want as far as welding is concerned.
the cost for the program in the nine months
training program for the certification program here at Butte College
is approximately twenty eight to thirty two hundred dollars
that covers books, tuition
and also tools we expect you to buy your own leathers, your own welding hood, safety
glasses those tools
will leave with you. I think the great thing about coming here and becoming thing about becoming an and become a
certified welder is that we are well known throughout the state of california
and the united states
Butte College has a reputation in the state for the first rate welding
program
for looking for a couple of really major things one is, for us at PG & E,
see this is an opportunity to be
uh... in a career
what we've seen so far there's an incredible amount of
uh... first of all quality in the individuals
uh... we have some employees that actually from Butte College
uh... as they move in progress they also have the ability to uh... to move into
leadership roles, which we call forman roles
what makes Butte stand out is
the individuals that we're working with here
Don Robinson and and his a
faculty here that run the welding uh... are phenomenal most importantly talk
about career-wise look we all be doing to make these all better candidates
not just for PG & E but for future job opportunities.
Ideally we like to see our families that we raise here in the community
find jobs in the same community
that more that we can offer training, the more we cooperate with Butte College and other industries
it's a mutual benefit for everybody
not just a financial considerations
would like to see these communities
well developed in a proper way. Butte College is producing welders
that have more experience in
processes that we use.
the graduates at Butte College also understand
what a good work ethic is...
the best thing that the welding program produces is work ethic
seeing that this is a two year program they do do a nine month. It is a forty
hour week program
that every student is required to go through in that forty hour week program
they then learn they need to work in a forty hour week.
They real strongly believe in a work ethic I wouldn't have the work ethic I have
unless I had gone through the program
i think that the inspiration that these instructors
bring each of the, each of the graduates here
is the right kind of of
business attitude so they can be successful
when they go down their career path
I firmly believe that if you want to become a good welder you need to go through the
Butte College welding program
hands down I'd say this is the best welding program that there is in the nation
i would actually venture out to tell you that this is the best welding class
program itself
internationally. What this program provides to the students
is an opportunity and opens more doors as far as career opportunities
and that's what certification paper give to you.
we're building the future of the welding industry
