I've always really liked reading, but if reading isn't your thing, you may still have required
books to read outside of your English class. Here's some ideas for books that you'll pick
up, and won't be able to put down.
"The Hunger Games," by Suzanne Collins, is about 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, who lives
in a post apocalyptic world in the country of Panem, which is where the United States
used to be. In the book, the Hunger Games is an annually televised event where the government
selects several teenagers to compete in a battle to the death, where only one can survive.
My friend just recommended this book to me, and she absolutely loved it.
One book I really love is "Holes," by Louis Sachar. It's about Stanley Yelnats, who's
convicted of stealing a very important pair of shoes. And even though he's innocent, he's
forced to choose between jail and a place called Camp Green Lake. Upon choosing Camp
Green Lake, Stanley finds that there is nothing quite green about it, and there's certainly
no lake. He and the other boys of the camp are forced to dig holes everyday by an evil
warden, and they're not even told why they have to dig them. Stanley blames all of his
misfortune on his great-great good for nothing, pig stealing grandfather, who put a curse
on his family years, and years, and years ago. What Stanley doesn't realize, is that
the holes he's digging are about to uncover secrets from his family's own past.
If you've already finished the "Harry Potter series," maybe more than once, and it's time
to pick up a new series, try "A Series of Unfortunate Events," by Lemony Snicket. This
is absolutely one of my favorite book series. It follows the lives of three children, who
are orphaned after an arsonist house fire takes down their family home. Placed in the
custody of their evil distant relative, Count Olaf, they soon find he's only after them
to steal their inheritance. Even if you guys have already seen the movie, I would strongly
recommend picking up the books, because there's so much going on in them that the movie just
couldn't capture.
