The mission of the Student Success Department really is to improve our campus support services for our students like you.
What we want to do is create an environment where you feel comfortable coming in, asking
questions, and, ultimately, help you through graduation.
The College has actually purchased new tutorial software in English, reading, math, Spanish, and typing
for new students like yourself to utilize to improve your assessment scores.
What we've found is that students often coming in and back to school for the first time in a while
want to brush up their skills in some areas before they assess or after they assess.
So we're making this available to you through the Student Success Department--actually through the Student Success Lab.
Our financial literacy program is available to you as a resource to help improve your understanding of financial
terminology as well as the resources available to you as you pursue your undergraduate degree.
Some of the different workshops that are available to you thanks to our partnership
with local financial institutions include topics like personal finance, building a better budget and understanding credit.
What we've realized on campus is often times our students like yourself will really benefit from
being connected with other students and faculty as you progress toward your degree.
What we've tried to do is create a mentoring program that allows you access to the resources
that you are going to need to be successful. Students who participate in our mentoring
program will actually receive information on campus organizations, events, resources
that might assist them as they might struggle with things along the way or as you might
struggle with things along the way. And, in addition to that, we can help you in choosing
your degree program, understanding the options that might be available to you in careers.
The purpose of the Student Success Center here at Rose State College is to help you
become successful as a student. We're here to motivate you, to engage you on campus, to
provide one-on-one resources, and individualized attention. Some of the resources we provide
to you as a student here at Rose State College are learning skills assessment.
We basically test you on an inventory and it gives us a measure such as what type of a learner
you are. After we have that information, we can then provide you with better study skills
information; such as if you're a visual learner, or auditory. We can provide you with tips and other
information to help you maximize your study potential.
We also provide you the opportunity to attend study skills workshops here at Rose State College.
Various topics are covered: test-taking strategies, organizational skills,
survival skills 101. These are some of the areas that we touch on that have shown to be of interest to you as a student.
We also provide you with the opportunity to attend study skills workshops here at Rose State College.
Some of the topics that we cover are test- taking strategies, organizational skills, college survival
101 which gives you an overview of what to expect on campus, some tips on getting started
early on to be successful.
If you are interested in any of our services, feel free to stop in at your earliest convenience.
We are housed in the Student Services Building, room 106.
We can provide you with help at the Student Success Center in various ways.
Our basic goal is to make you feel comfortable on campus.
It's to be a go to place for you. If you have questions about any subject, you can turn
to us and we can refer you to the appropriate individuals or we can do some of the ground work for you--
make some phone calls and get answers instead of you having to run around campus and feel lost.
As a new student, it is a great resource because we can connect you to other
resources on campus. You may come in and have difficulty in math and may be concerned about "What do I do now?"
"Where do I go?" We can call over and connect you with the tutoring center and help you get the assistance that you need
as far as guidance, tutoring times, and that type of information.
We have really good workshops that we put on for students and they address a lot of the common topics.
We have college survival 101 which answers a lot of questions such as "I'm here now, what do I do? Where do I go? What to expect the first
few weeks of campus?" and these workshops are free to you as a student. We try to have them in as convenient a time as
possible.
We cover other topics such as test anxiety. Often students and they are terrified of a test,
they don't know what to do. We try to reach out to them, help them, give them some strategies
to be successful. We cover organizational skills, just various topics--how to study better
and better note taking. Often times as a high school student you may not have even taken notes.
But when you get to the college level, you are going to find that there are classes that you are going to need assistance with and you are going
to need to know how to take notes to be successful in college.
You may not know what your learning style is. You could be a visual learner--do you learn by what you see?
By what you hear? Are you a "hands-on" learner? We actually can offer you the opportunity to take an inventory here.
We sit down with you one on one and go over topics such as what do I do as a visual learner?
Well, you could use a highlighter. As an auditory learner, you could use a tape recorder.
We try to provide that information. It could be really helpful when you are studying for an exam if you know you are maximizing your
study potential. One of the things that I do with a student is I can sit down with you and
as a new student you may have questions about "What is a transcript? What is a credit hour?"
"Who do I ask about this? What if I don't pass the class, what then?"
We can sit down and take a look at your schedule. We can analyze courses that you are taking now.
We can look at what I'm going to take next semester. Kind of sketch out a plan of action for you.
I want to be the "go to" person that you come back to answer your questions so that you don't have to travel all over campus.
I want you to know that our door is open to you. We are more than willing to sit down - no matter how long it takes.
Sometimes an hour we are here with you. Whatever it is that you need, that's what we want you to have.
We want you to have the one-on-one, individualized attention that you deserve.
