It was as recently as December 17th, 1903 that Wilbur and Orville Wright
made man's first sustained flights in an engine-driven airplane at Kitty-Hawk, North Carolina, in
the United States. Alberto Santos Dumont, on September 13, 1909,
The Brazilian pioneer airman made the first airplane flight in all of Europe.
The first United States Air Mail Service was begun on May 15th, 1918 between
New York City and Washington, D.C. It was only 26 years ago, within the easy
recollections of men living today, that the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean was
accomplished. Four United States Navy Flying boats left Newfoundland
on May 16th, 1919. Only one of these reached England, fifteen days later.
