The Endicott College Writing Center presents...
MLA: How to cite a book source.
When crediting a source, there are two kinds of citations you need to consider,
in-text citation and the citations required on your work cited page.
Let’s begin by looking at in-text citations.
Here we have a direct quote where the author's name is mentioned in the sentence --
We include the author’s last name,
and then after using the quotation we include the page number where the quotation came from in parenthesis and followed by a period.
Now let’s look at an example where we have a direct quote and the author’s name is not mentioned in the sentence.
After using the quotation, we include the author’s last name and the page number where the quotation came from,
in parenthesis and followed by a period.
Now let’s look at paraphrasing.
In the example above we have a paraphrase where the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence.
We include the authors name, paraphrase the information,
and then include the page numbers where we're paraphrasing the information from in that source
in parenthesis and followed by a period.
In the bottom example, we have paraphrasing where the author's name is not mentioned in the sentence.
Here, after paraphrasing the information, we include the author’s last name
and the pages where we're paraphrasing information from in parenthesis and followed by a period.
Now let's look at what needs to be included on your work cited page.
For a work cited page we need to include the author’s last name and first name,
the title of the book italicized,
the city of publication,
the publisher,
the year of publication,
and then the medium, which in this case is print.
