This is Reading Instruction and Children’s Books.
I am Kate Todd. This tutorial will demonstrate how to find
reading levels of children’s books using Scholastic Book Wizard.
Scholastic Book Wizard is a free, online database that can be used by librarians, teachers,
parents and students. Most children’s and YA books are included in the database.
To begin, enter the URL of Scholastic Book Wizard in your browser.
You can search by title, author or keyword. I am going to search for Close to Famous by
Joan Bauer, which was a Newbery Honor Book in 2012.
There are 12 books with similar titles, but the one I want appears first on this list.
Selecting Close to Famous provides a summary of the book. On the left of the summary, you
will see Reading Level. This book has a Grade level equivalent of 3.2. Using U.S. grades,
3.2 means the text is at the level of a student in the 2nd month of 3rd grade.
In preparation for the assignments about numeric book levels, select a children’s book. Use
Scholastic Book Wizard to find the Grade level equivalent. Then respond to the questions
in the Numeric reading list discussion. If you need any help with this, or other parts
of the course, be sure to contact me.
