Hi I am Adam Murphy, Business Development Director for Cisco here at Global Knowlegde.
I am here today to talk about 'Bring your Own Device'.
So what is 'Bring your Own Device?'
Well actually its all about bringing as it says
any device to be able to access
corporate applications or to get onto a corporate network.
So it means I don't have to always have my work laptop with me to
get onto the corporate network, to maybe access email or
into the CRM system.
It means that maybe I'll be able to do that on a mobile phone. Or maybe even via a tablet.
So 'bring your own device' or BYOD as its called
is this mega trend that you will start to hear from vendors and Cisco is one of the leading vendors
that is actually talking about this now.
So they are leading with a product called ISE
It actually spelt I S E and it stands for identity, services, engine
And what this does is allows you to do
policy-making
which means that when you have contractors or when you've got
maybe people from different offices coming into your network and
its a more secure network it means that they can actually come on
be approved
while they're here or actually before they get to the premise.
So that they know they can access and have business continuity of working
and they can access the resources they need
and your comfortable actually with the threat side of things.
So alot of this works with CCX which is Cisco's authenticity
it doesn't work very well with Apple because, they have't paid the licenses for it
which obviously we were informed at Cisco Live this year so everyone that was there would of heard that one.
But depending on what type of
devices, Cisco try and
support as many as physically possible
and what the ISE
is actually able to do is that it does policy and provision making
so if you come on with the device and you don't have the right
security, it's going to put you
into a little place but it's not going to turn around and say you can't come on our network
Its going to say 'you can't come on our network...
but I'm going to allow you to access the website where you can go download
the right security patches
so that I will now allow you on.
So it's a great little tool there
But we are actually finding about BYOD is that
its not just being lead with technology
BYOD in most organisations is not lead by IT, they don't make the decisions to bring in all of these devices.
I'm sure most IT people out there, if they could,
they would limit it to one device, its alot easier to manage.
a lot of the decisions about BYOD within any organisation whether thats a partner
whether it's enterprise, whether it's public sector.
Typically comes from the top down
it could be that the managing director has just got a new tablet
whether it be a iPad or Google Nexus 7
and what they are able to is they come into IT and say look
I have this, I want to be ale to use this at work for work purposes.
I just don't want to play 'Angry Birds' anymore
I actually want to make this device
actually have a purpose rather than just for playing games and reading books.
So what the IT department have to do is, they have to make sure that
it can access the right devices but, they are still able to remote wipe it.
They are still able to
password resets, they are still able to make sure it's got the right security
authenticity on it.
So that when its coming on
the network gives it a green tick and it allows it to access what it needs to.
So BYOD is all about any device, anywhere, anytime
it has been around for a long while, we've all had things like Blackberry's
email onto push email onto mobile phones
what its now doing its allowing us to make that decision of what device we use.
Maybe in the future what we'll see is the car allowance will dissappear
actual instead
for a ride to the house
maybe there was an absolute assets and liabilities
that go on day one
a solution to your job signs of progress
it is not a photog
the office of the issues remain to be or meet some corporate bottom lines the
networks
so that you are you know what is going to be around for a long time
