§ (male speaker) L is for lighthouses,
and this is the Morris Island Lighthouse. Built in 1876, it's 132 years old now.
Now it's a quarter mile out in the ocean. The lighthouse has been
a guiding light for Charleston Harbor. §
The lighthouse is obsolete now because of all the GPS equipment,
all the satellite navigation aids that the ships have.
Lighthouses are just a visual reminder of where you need to be.
Save the Light is an organization founded in 1998.
It was a group of interested citizens on Folly Beach, James Island, other parts
of the Lowcountry. We heard the lighthouse was for sale,
and our mission is to save this lighthouse and keep it from falling into the ocean.
The first phase was to build a cofferdam around it.
The second phase is to reinforce the foundation and fill that cofferdam.
Once we do that, we can start the structure. We'll replace the glass in the top,
plug up all the bricks, and repaint it inside and out.
We'll never have another light in it, but we will have it for passive observation
from this point on Folly Beach.
