My name is Roland Perry I work on the Coast Guard ship Earl Grey as an oiler.

I’m from the Maritimes region. I’ve been with the Coast Guard for 22 years now.
You look after everything aboard the ship. If anything breaks, you fix it.
You look after the engines, the generators, the compressors, the air conditioners,
the electricity, the plumbing. You’re a mechanic aboard a ship.
We usually work 6 hours on, 6 hours off or sometimes we do larger shifts.
When you go to work, you have to do a round of the engine room,
make sure there’s no leak. Check your oil, check everything out
and once you do that you just monitor because you never know what’s going to happen
so an oiler always has to be on the ball all the time looking and listening and smelling
because that’s the three senses that you need.
So working as an oiler you need your MED, Marine Engine Duty,
and you need your engine room rating security. You can either get that by going to Holly Cowey
or if you’ve worked on other ships before you already have it.
It’s a good life, it’s a good job. It’s 28 days on, 28 days off.
The 28 days off is nice but you work hard the 28 days you’re on.

There a lot of memorable moments out in the middle of the ocean and the beautiful sunset.
Sitting on the back deck, stars...there is millions of them. Look around at the wild life,
the whales, the dolphins. There is a lot of good memories.
There is a lot of lives for everybody you might like it, you might not but I like it.
