I intern at Service Members Legal Defense Network in Washington, DC.
I did get to do a lot of really interesting things.
I got to meet with members of Congress face to face.
As well as meet with their staff members.
I got to prepare testimony for a hearing that went before the House of Representatives,...
...and along with that I got to go to a lot of different political rallies all over Capitol Hill.
I met a lot of interesting people including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi , Hilary Clinton,...
...a lot of famous people, and a lot of pioneers for human rights.
When I was first going into this internship I had an interest in human rights and learning about the government system.
However, I went into my internship with only a communications major...
...and when I came out I declared a second major, political science.
There are two very important things that I learned while interning:
1. Networking
When you go out and you intern or you volunteer somewhere. Don't be afraid to get contacts.
Talk to people, get to know people, and network through people. Because it will definitely help you out in the long run.
2. Don't be scared
I was only a communications major going into an internship where I did a lot of legal work.
And I never ever took any political science courses.
One word that I would use to describe my internship experience overall is...
...incredible
