some interesting goings-on in the
in the political scandal and politicians going to jail world
and we start with tom delay and we draw a parallel to that between
that and Governor Don Siegelman which it by the way free dash
Don .org is on the website to learn all about Don Siegelman if you're not
familiar with his
situation and of course bread blog dot com
Brad Friedman founder editor and publisher the Brad blog's was
the bread welcome back hey Tom how are you mean it there is other news going on
other than the
the hostage-taking crisis I well we cover that for the first are so I wanna
talk about the
you know it's like a enough already right yet Galloway
so hand and I find this story fascinating
the a it Tom DeLay was pretty much nakedly taking money from
corporations and fat cats in Texas and and using that money to pass along to
other Republicans in the House
I this is in order to get them to vote for him for speaker the house this is
john bainer does the same thing I think he raised what 24 million last year some
amazing amount of money
and he's the largest funder of other republicans in the house representatives
from within the house representatives
and that's basically what the speaker does but it turns out that that's
illegal the way that he did it in Texas to have a right
yet know yet why what is it difference is that it is
specifically illegal for corporations in Texas to give money
to political candidates for office they can give them to
political action committees for you know administration
administrative funds and so forth but what Tom DeLay did back in 2002
was he accepted his his pack down there
accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from our corporate interests
which are not supposed to go to candidate so what he did
what he talks that money and he gave it to a
RNC a national political action committee
with the instructions that the RNC committee
should give that money 27 specific
candidates for office back in Texas that
other prosecutors argued successfully is money laundering
and Tom DeLay was was found guilty in 2010 to two different counts
up money laundering in what sense to about eight years
in jail but then of course he was immediately released on bail
and has never served the night in jail
before a to republican judges
about a week and a half ago reverse those surcharges
acquitted Tom DeLay said that the corporations giving the money
a did so legally therefore is
the you can't considerate money laundering it was
you know sort of this tortured logic that the two Republicans on this
three-judge panel voted for
democrat dissented but for now at least
it has allowed Tom DeLay to get off scot-free
without spending a night in jail which brings us now tom delay courses
it was one of those a not 1 I've
if not the most powerful Republican in the United States
and in fact he had that nickname The Hammer
which brings us to Don Siegelman who is a democrat and was the governor I love
love Alabama yep for Arkansas
know which one yes markets out about how about yeah okay thank you
and and a Don Siegelman tell us the story
yeah wanting contretemps delayed case because
that his case by the way what was very successful though
detection a who are running for the Legislature's were elected
they were then able to jarriel for the first time since reconstruction by the
way the republicans end up taking a majority of the Texas State House
they were able to gerrymander Texas and the result was
5 additional republicans in the US House
so it was scheme that was very successful
very successful for Tom DeLay who became the a republican majority leader
contrast that with Don Siegelman
who received nothing nothing a personal like a mini
in in what he was charged with charges related to
what they call bribery but a 113
a bipartisan former state's attorney general have
sent a note saying is you know to to the supreme court saying
this was not a crime what Siegelman was charged with was never a crime before in
the history of this country
he received there was no quid pro quo he received no personal benefit
from this money that was given by a
a serve a campaign contributor contributor2 gave money
to a lottery campaign that
a Siegelman was in favor of that would send
a poor kids to school 43
expert which allows states to I used to live in Georgia and they have
they have a scholarship fund that's funded with the lottery
exactly and that's what Siegelman was was pushing for he was in favor of it
this businessman contributed a lot of money to that
to that fund and what they claim that this guy got in return was that he was
allowed to be on a state hospital board
but the fact of the matter is it was a voluntary
a hospital for another which he was not paid for this position and he had been
appointed to that very same position
by three previous governors previous
republican governors for there was really nothing
apparently that Siegelman got in exchange for Don Siegelman committed no
crime
and yet he is in prison as you and I are speaking right now time to Lake
Community
obvious crime and yet he has never served a day in jail
six-and-a-half years is what Don Siegelman is currently
currently serving and he has charged
up a massive conspiracy that Tom DeLay was involved in
to you noticed steal his 2002 election
and then later on to prosecute him and put him in jail along with guys like
railroads
and Jack Abramoff and so forth and there is a great deal of evidence
I to show that that is exactly what happened including that stolen election
by the way which
a he went to bed 2002 having been reelected
announced by all the networks as having been the winner of that election
only to find out the next day that what you know DeBolt
tabulate her in one little county in Alabama
suddenly discovered five thousand votes that they haven't seen previously it
change the results of the election
for governor didn't change any other votes
across the state but it did change the governor's election and
yeah he was tossed out he was a very popular
Democratic governor and that was something that
well you just can't have in a southern state and the guy who ran against Kenya
Bob the guy he ran against bob Riley a
who is now the governor of alabama was talk
recently I think he still has his knee I actually think the smallest
yeah a guy he ran against bob Riley his
campaign manager such who a
mister canary what was his first name I
lower Canaria built in there ill canary his campaign manager bill canary was
Carl rose best friend front from from college days
and his wife the campaign manager for bob
but if for bob Riley for Don siegelman's up Republican opponent the campaign
managers
wife was the federal prosecutor
in Alabama appointed by I believe George W Bush
yes who prosecuted Don Siegelman
tests correct I mean unbelievable conflict of interest and by the way at
the court
as the case proceeded the judges that oversaw the case
are were also clients up call Road so you have you know the prosecutor married
to
the campaign the chief I love Don siegelman's rival
I mean its an extraordinary case have been just as far as I can see
and yes single men still in jail tom delay is walking free
a Ted Stevens you remember similarly was
was let off the hook as soon as the Obama administration came to office
because prosecutors prosecutorial misconduct but in this case
there seems to be no action whatsoever other than the Department of Justice
trying to get a stronger sentence against Don Siegelman
is just outrageous Tom it I
outrageous is is not a strong enough word it's anti-american
it is it's the kind of thing you'd expect to see in a banana republic it's
the kind of thing that you'd expect to see
when this is this is the kind of criminal justice system that North Korea
has
this this yeah its this makes no salir and something that's how we got a
statement that crap blog dot com
from the governor from jail %uh following it
tom delay is just getting off the hook and I'll tell you he's fight mad about
you can read that
have grabbed like dot com and I hope people job run

read blog dot com Bradford thanks fred
