Welcome back to another one of Don's Get Your Health Back series. Today I have Doctor
Carlos Orozco, who is the medical director of
many companies, and I'm curious because we were just talking about cholesterol
and hormones. Now what's the relationship here Doctor? [Dr. Carlos] Cholesterol is the basic or we
can call it a building block of what we call steroidal hormones these are
hormones that are secreted by our *** organs, such as the ovaries in women and
the *** in men, and the hormones related we're referring to are known as estrogen,
progesterone, testosterone etc. These hormones play a major
role in our physiology and they have a basic skeleton that derived from
cholesterol. [Don] They're derived from cholesterol? [Dr. Carlos] Yes. [Don] So cholesterol isn't
the enemy here. [Dr. Carlos] No, it's not. When people measure so-called cholesterol what they
are measuring is not the cholesterol, it's the protein that carries the cholesterol
and a lot of this protein are just like vehicles in the streets, their main
concern is to carry people, but you find many vehicles, many cars parking, parking lots,
basically inside houses, on the streets and they haven't got
any passengers on them, so if you were to find out how many people are
riding cars, you cannot just go count the number of
cars because a lot of these cars will be empty. I mean one car you can have five
people, in other cars you'll only have one person, so the size of the car doesn't
reflect how many people go in the car, the same with the lipoproteins that are
the carriers for cholesterol. [Don] So you're saying that the carriers of cholesterol
could be empty and we need that cholesterol for normal hormone production.
[Dr. Carlos] Yes absolutely and this is something that is vital. Why? Because we have
divided these cars, these carriers into three groups. The first one is a high
density lipoprotein, the word cholesterol is not there, and is referred to us
HDL: high density lipoprotein. There's another one that is a low density
lipoprotein, LDL and there are the triglycerides.
In these names that I have mentioned, the word cholesterol is absent, simply
because they carry the cholesterol they are not the cholesterol. [Don] Dr. Carlos are
you saying that cholesterol is essential and we're measuring the carriers for
cholesterol, not the cholesterol itself? [Dr. Carlos] Exactly. [Don] How about that for a piece of
information? I'm going to invite Dr. Carlos back to go into a little bit more
detail about that because in my studies I'm finding that cholesterol isn't the
enemy, so maybe on our next chat with Dr. Carlos we'll be able to explain a little
bit more about why cholesterol isn't the enemy. There you go, thank you for
watching either one of Don's Get Your Health Back series.
