Anita Lightstone: I am Anita Lightstone, I am the Program Director
for the UK Vision Strategy. For the period 2013 to '18. Outcome 2 of the UK Vision Strategy
is focused on ensuring that the person who has a diagnosed eye condition gets the right
treatment, in the right place and at the right time. Also, if or when there is sight loss,
there are appropriate services and support and these are really and truly available to
all.
Andy Cassels-Brown: My name is Andy Cassels-Brown, I'm a Consultant
Ophthalmologist and I work at the St James's University NHS Trust in Leeds. Over the next
five years the refresh of Outcome 2 of the UK Vision Strategy is about increasing user
involvement in the design of these services, increasing the integration between primary
care and secondary care. That is, opticians in high street and general practitioners linking
better with hospital services. It's about also the secondary care services linking up
with the low vision and emotional support services as well so that people are better
supported when they go back to their daily living in the community setting.
Jo Foster: My name's Jo Foster and I'm the Eye Clinic
Liaison Officer here at the hospital. Now I understand you've just had a consultation
with the doctor, how do you feel that that went?
Patient: He did give me this pamphlet. He said that
I should read about my condition.
Andy Cassels-Brown: It's a real opportunity for us to make sure
that there are no areas where services are deficient. Patients have often fallen through
the gaps in the services. This is a real opportunity to put a lot of energy into making sure that
the whole of those pathways are linked up. That really does involve partnership working
across all the eye care, eye health providers but also importantly partnership with our
service users.
Anita Lightstone: The UK Vision Strategy sets a high level framework
for change but it's by working together that we will really achieve those ambitions and
bring that change about, make it become reality.
