Hi there and welcome to Inspired Painting Tips with me Deborah Burrow.
I love creating texture in watercolours and one of the techniques I encourage my students
to use is salt with watercolour to create beautiful textural effects.
The question I get asked is, "How does it work?".
Well, I'll show you how.
Salt creates wonderful special effects. I'm attempting to create the effect of foliage
here in a tree. I'm mixing some watercolour paint straight onto the paper, and I'm going
to add salt while its wet.
What will happen is the salt will adsorb the paint and liquid into the crystals, and keep
it locked in. Leave it to dry naturally. This is what it looks like when its drying,
and you can see some of the salt flakes already full of pigment and water.
This is it dried. Brush off the salt, and what remains are wonderful white speckly patches.
