Firstly, you must obey monastic regulations
to lead a religious life.
Ask just about Dharma.
Don't talk any piece of slander.
Everyone here will try their best to help you.
I got it, master!
After learning Dharma together with the Sangha for a while,
I understand that worldly happiness is temporary,
and love is the origin of pain.
I'd like to become a Buddhist nun.
You've realized deliverance truths.
I'm glad to know your intention.
The chief nun should hold a home-leaving ceremony for Matanga.
Who are Tathagata's great disciples?
I'm from royal family.
In public, he ruled me out of the people
Who're able to undertake leadership.
Try your best, Deva!
You must be the leader of the Sangha
and I'll be a king.
We'll both reign the people.
Please act!
When you need anything,
I am always beside you.
Restore life to me!
Get out!
No
Calm down, Angulimala!
Those are complexes about your guilt.
Try your best to perform repentance,
keep precepts and practise meditation.
Those obsessions decrease gradually.
Take your bowl and go for mendicancy with me now.
Let's offer some stored paddy to the Buddha.
Only adults can make offering.
We're too young to offer.
We'd like to offer it to you.
Thanks for your donation!
Ananda,
you take it and blend it with water
to spread earthen walls at my monastery.
Mrs Vibharaksita has just come to offer wheat flour
and many kinds of peas for the retreat season.
She also said that
construction of a double-storeyed monastery
at Vaisali is about to finish.
Your Majesty!
What's wrong with you?
The World Honoured One!
My empire has murderer Angulimala
in cold blood to terrify the masses.
Up to now, he's not yet arrested for purnishment.
Your Majesty!
If that murderer
has bettered his conduct,
do you want to arrest him?
The World Honoured One!
I'll bow to him and offer him everything necessary.
However, why is such a precept breaker
and an evil-karma maker able
to observe precepts and control his mind?
Your Majesty!
This is Angulimala,
whom you need to seek out.
Don't be terrified!
This is Angulimala,
who is able to control his evil mind
and purify his three karmas
of action, speech and thought.
Are you murderer Angulimala, arya?
I'm Angulimala.
What a wonder!
How can you win the heart of an uncontrollable man
and purify an unpurified man, the World Honoured One!
You remedied violent suffering
in wisdomand compassion.
I'd like to memorize your merit.
If Dharma considered as a laksana means clinging to that form.
If Dharma considered as no laksana means clinging to form unreality.
If clinging to form unreality supposed
to be no laksana means still clinging to laksana.
My teaching should be understood as
a boat used to cross a river.
Reaching the destination, you should leave the boat.
Therefore, Dharma should be given up,
let alone not Dharma!
We'll take a rest here.
Hey, my two brethens!
Yesterday the Buddha told both brothers to come in the capital
and declare that Buddhist Congregation
didn't put trust in bhikkhu Devadatta.
However, why haven't
they announced anything after food mendicancy?
Or were they also bribed by Devadatta?
Yes, I don't know
why both brethens haven't obeyed the World Honoured One!
Iwonder what else will happen to the Sangha.
Someone wants to meet you, master!
This place is also wide and airy.
How are you, noble brethen?
Hey, brother!
Please sit here to preach together.
OK! I can sit here.
Preach here, both brothers!
I have had some sleepless nights.
I must go back to the monastery now.
Brethens!
Anyone who still has queries can give opinions
to discuss together.
Noble Brother!
Most of us have just come here.
We didn't have many chances to learn at home.
We don't know what to ask.
Ah!
We all are the beginners in step-by-step cultivation,
so it's necessary to be more courageous.
Coming from different backgrounds and status,
we need honest hearts
when we want to come to the Buddha.
Remember to keep pure mind
and right belief in Dharma for eradication of sufferings.
Diverging from that purpose means falling into a wrong path.
The world has so many complicated problems caused
by greed, anger and ignorance.
Leaving home and taking refuge
to the Buddha means returning to the Buddha,
so that our inherent and latent Buddhata
inside each of us comes out.
To become a Buddha,
you should take refuge to the Dharma:
practise the Dharma the Buddha cultivated and realized.
Taking refuge to the Sangha
means relying on the Sangha,
who study and practise Dharma purely,
harmoniously and liberally.
The Triple Jewels are excellent means,
and a bridge to take refuge for practice and deliverance.
We received food from alms-givers,
so we must accumulate merits and blessings.
Bhagava!
Finally, your two great disciples belongs to me
and gradually I'll become a leader of the Sangha.
Hell! How is it?
Why does my supernatural power disappear?
Noble Master!
Please start your speech.
Ask your brothers to lecture.
Tell everybody that I'm too tired to lecture.
Yes.
I have to admit that Sariputra lectured very well.
Thanks to both brothers,
we know what the Dharma is,
and we are wiser.
After they left,
we haven't known who to ask now.
King Ajatasattu hasn't come here for long.
He is master Deva's great benefactor,
having offered this cultivation place.
In my opinion, we shouldn't live here.
Let's go back to Bamboo Grove
and do penance to the Buddha,
because we received unpure offerings.
He gave alms with an unpure mind.
He's taken advantage of Buddhism for his political intrigue.
If he had self-improvement,
he wouldn't kill his father to usurp the throne.
Is it right?
What about him?
He will bring it on himself.
I cannot help correcting what is wrong.
OK. It's necessary to correct mistakes.
Master Sariputra said that cultivation means correction.
Good creates blessing;
evil creates bad karma.
Hey!
Who wants to follows me should go right now.
OK. Let's go.
Let me go with you.
Yes. Go!
OK.
Wait for me to go, friends!
Master!
Most mendicant remainders left this morning.
The rest of them are outside Rajagrha.
Two brothers Sariputra and Maudgalyayana proclaimed to all:
from now on,
the congregation doesn't trust you;
you're yourself responsible for what you do.
The Sangha isn't responsible.
They cheated me.
Hell, Lokajyestha!
Why did they all leave?
Nothing is insufficient here!
Yes,
everything is enough here,
but noble monks who have lately been mendicant for food face difficulties
People often ask whenever offering anything.
They don't give food
if the monks are fromMt Elephant Head.
The monks find it hurtful.
Is it really?
Master!
Hell!
Lokajyestha!
Why have I shivered a lot since
Iwore this robe?
Wearing a monastic robe,
do you think you are a real monk?
I know it is disguise.
But I feel less courageous than the previous times.
When did you become merciful?
Getting money from the king
and Deva,
You hesitate now.
Do you want to be killed?
You should stay here.
Let's go. Forward!
Go!
Having arrived, you both can come in.
My goodness!
He knew my coming.
Conceal our sword!
Please! Please!
We come to see you.
We wash our feet and come in!
Come in and kill him when having a chance.
OK!
Have a seat.
Thank you for visiting me.
We were heard about your disease,
but we couldn't come.
On the occasion,
we come and listen to your Dharma today.
I got a light cold
but I recover now.
Where is Uvekya?
Why doesn't he come?
It's a little uneasy to wear a monastic robe the first time,
but it reminds us not to do evils.
My goodness!
He knew my own origin clearly.
We are disclosed.
We could be arrested right here.
I bow to the World Honoured One a thousand times,
Please forgive me.
Athousand bows to Buddha!
Please don't have us caught.
I'd like to do penance to You.
The World Honoured One!
Whose swords are here?
Well!They belong to those
who visited me this afternoon.
I'll give back to them tomorrow.
Please wait for me here.
Give it to me.
OK.
These people also come to see me.
The World Honoured One!
I'm so happy to see you like this.
As soon as I returned home,
I heard that Ananda came
to inform me of Your sickness.
I'm so worried that I come here immediately.
Moreover, I break bad news to You.
Crown prince Ajatasatru
has been gotten the throne.
However, he still feels insecure about king Bimbisara's existence,
so he ordered to put the king father into prison with famishment.
The Queen is so distressed,
trying to provide relief for the King all the time.
I've just returned from her place.
The king's state is very serious now.
Blindness of fame and wealth
makes man greatly unvirtuous.
Thank you for your information.
I'll find the way to help him.
The World Honoured One!
As soon as Ajatasatru came to the throne,
he recruited more soldiers.
Our Sangha must be very careful.
Other forces always want to control religions.
Your saying is correct.
In the world,
this usually happens.
However, to home-leaving people,
precepts surely barricade off
their participation in worldly affairs.
A person who doesn't practice
but break precepts will be excluded.
Yes, I got it.
I feel assured now.
I'd like to give You some medicine.
Let me go home,
The World Honoured One!
Khyabha!
Could you lead these two monks to the mountain foot?
They have come here since this afternoon without bringing lamps.
Please help me!
Yes...
So let's go together.
The coach's waiting at the mountain foot.
I'll take you to Bamboo Grove.
Remember to find the bright way to go!
Don't go in the dark!
Yes, we see.
Be careful!
Yes!...
Yes!...Thank you.
Please.
Please prepare the coach for me!
Yes!
Let's go!
Yes!
Hurry up!
The king and Deva said that we had to kill both those people,
but why had they died?
Reverend!
Good evening!
The Buddha asked me to take these people to Bamboo Grove.
On the way, we were pursued for killing;
luckily, we escaped.
Could we stay overnight here?
OK!
Please follow me to go inside.
Let's go, brethens!
Hurry up!
The Buddha sent three of you to this place,
so you can stay here
and we'll meet again tomorrow.
Yes
It's you.
What happened?
I can't understand it.
Hey! Without Bhagava's reminder,
Without Bhagava's reminder,
you both and I were surely dead.
Now we're in danger,
because the king and Deva
will continue to have us killed.
Bhagava had surely known it before,
so he sent us here,
where we are safely protected.
As a result, we are in a safe place.
He is just Bhagava.
Oh!
When did you make friends with Bhagava?
Please be quiet!
I nearly did....
It's not right!
While standing at mountain foot,
and seeing you both going up,
I realized that something would happen.
Shut up!
You know nothing.
What do you know?
Sh!
I should wait here.
He must pass this road to return to Bamboo Grove.
Take care of yourselves.
Despite self-improvement,
he is still good at martial arts.
Don't come near him.
Throw him stone to death.
Right.Throw him stone to death.
Throw!
Die! Evildoer!
An evil man! A killier!
Angulimala!
Are you OK?
Karma can't be avoided.
No one escapes from the law of cause and effect.
I show you the way,
but reaching the destination or not depends on you.
You had better repent of your sins
and diligently cultivate your mind.
Yes! I got it.
Bravada can win human hearts,
but surely this elephant will kill him.
Bottle up quickly!
Gotama's going to pass the defile.
Bhagava!
A fierce elephant!
Come back quickly!
Please go!
Calm down, Ananda!
The problem of the elephant is over.
We continue to travel.
Yes!
Bhagava can win animal hearts
but He can't with a lifeless stone.
Bhagava,
You only have tomorrow left.
The World Honour One!
Let me dress your wounds.
No problem.
Just a little pain.
Returning the monastery, we will do it.
Now let's go!
What happens?
What happens?
How strange it is!
I've been living here for nearly 100 years.
Suddenly stones fell down.
Bhagava nearly lost his life.
I think someone wants to kill Bhagava.
I heard that a fierce elephant nearly injured Bhagava yesterday.
Now there are stones to fall.
Who is the instigator?
Bhagava has recently been in successive accidents.
We ought to investigate
and find ways to protect Bhagava.
Ha...ha...ha...hey !!!
My son!
Don't leave parents!
My son!
Don't leave parents!
Why did I create a lot of evil karmas in past lives?
When will I pay them up?
Without killing Mahamaudgalyayan I can't sleep.
Do you remember
when he transformed me into another man.
You believed so and beat me unconscious.
We must kill him!
Just while he is in religious meditation,
we can rush forward.
On this Dharma platform,
there's neither me nor Bhagava.
Rightly, all Dharma is unreal.
I shouldn't get attachment to create bad karmas.
Greed, anger and ignorance
are three toxic drugs.
I understand it,Tathagata.
I'monly a mediocre monk.
I don't deserve kneeling to You.
Brother!
Brother! Are you all right?
What do you come here for, Ananda?
Brother!
Please say out, brother!
It's beyond doubt that you follow the Buddha
but do wordly affairs.
In the past,
you always conflicted with the crown prince
in the royal palace.
I supposed it's just foolish acts in childhood.
I can't expect that habit is now with you.
Do you think you can take advantage of the Sangha?
King Ajatasatru also repents of his mistakes.
How about you?
What should I do?
His illness is extremely bad.
Karmic retribution has come.
It's difficult to breathe.
It's too late.
Listen to me.
You should go back to repent of sins to the Bhagava.
Go!
Let's go!
However, will Bhagava forgive me?
I ...make repentance ... to ... Bhagava!
Before leaving your body,
you should remember
I don't have the right to forgive you.
Tathagata is only the means you show repentance;
to eliminate karmavarana,
you yourself must purify your karmas.
Realizing faults and correcting them
is a good person's behavior.
Afault itself is without substance.
It's non-existent.
If attachment is untied in your mind,
it disappears naturally.
You should clearly understand that
your mind and your faults
are unreal.
This is true repentance.
Thanks! Bravada.
Deva passed away.
Not only in this life but also in many previous lives,
he's usually against Buddhist Sangha,
causing lots of evil karma.
However, Devadatta is also a friend integral
and even good in our way of cultivation.
Thanks to him,
we can achieve high-up perseverance and diligence.
If Devadatta's actions are waste,
excrement,
flower is enlightenment.
To a real Buddhism learner,
an evil person also can also be his teacher.
We'll learn from them
what we should avoid forever.
Let's come to him in compassion.
We are slower than him.
Go fast!
Everyone sits at every corner on the roof.
Wait for his sitting to shoot.
Anyway, I must pay my past karma up.
Now I should sit still to be shot.
Hey guys!
You know his magic power.
Be careful about his revival!
Now, we cut him into pieces,
then each one throws one piece as far as possible.
Then, come back for award.
Help ! Help !
Arya Mahamaudgalyayan has been killed.
Mahamaudgalyayana!
What happened?
Brother!...Brother!
Why are you in such distress?
I come here in antara-bhava.
Bhagava!
I was killed
because I wanted to pay my past karma,
so I didn't resist them.
Now, I come back to inform the Buddha
and also the great assembly.
Now, everyone calms down.
Talk and look at Mahamaudgalyayana the last time.
Brother!
You saved us many times without caring your life.
We always memorize your Bodhisattva practice.
Master! Please let's bow to you the last time.
Master!
In the first days at Bamboo grove,
we learned from you.
You sat quietly every night near our monastery
because you worried about our safety.
Everyone!
His conditions ended.
The religious way also completed.
Now, let himenter Nirvana.
Follow Mahamaudgalyayana's example
with great filial piety
and sacrificing himself for Buddhism.
No enlightenment and purity
can be achieved without your self-effort.
Keep trying patiently
and light a torch by oneself to go.
The WorldHonored One!
I've never heard such golden words.
I hope you and your Sangha group
will come by our home if possible,
so that we can make offerings
and listen to Buddha Dharma.
You have a sincerely religious heart.
I'll visit you some days later.
Yes.
I wonder when the Buddha comes here.
Now, I go to the forest and look for mushroom,
preparing food for offerings to the Buddha.
To the Buddha and noble monks,
our sincere hearts are important.
We have a little dry mushroom at home.
Please pick some more mushrooms!
Yes.
Stay here!
I'll go to meet the Buddha.
Please stop eating!
The gruel seems to have something unusual.
The World Honour One!
What happened?
Don't worry!
Clean up these bowls of gruel.
Don't have anyone or any animal eat it.
Thanks for your sincerity.
preached,
and then had lunch.
Now we must go.
How strange it is!
Those mushrooms are cleaned and dried.
I wonder if the Buddha is OK.
Three months ago,
Bhagava said he'd enter Nirvana.
Maybe the condition has come.
I really worry about that.
The World Honoured One!
The World Honoured One! I'm so worried.
I hope when you go away,
no separation in the Sangha will occur.
I dislike separation and conflicts at all.
Ananda and all Sangas!
Do you see if our monks
fight and argue about the content of Dharmaparyaya such as
Smrti-Upasthana,
Catvari-Samyakprahanani,
Pancendriyani,
Panca-balani,
Saptabodhyanga,
and Astangika-marga?
The World Honour One!
I haven't seen any fighting
or argument about their content.
But I think thanks in your time,
everybody relies on you,
obey you,
and cultivate their minds without any trouble.
However, after you enter Nirvana,
they may fight about precepts
and styles of living and propagation.
If so, many people would be sad
nor believe in Buddhism.
Don't worry!
Please remember
if there are any arguments about doctrine content,
you should consider which side accords with the Sutras
and the precepts is right,
because the Sutras and the precepts
are harmonious,
two in one.
This is the way to solve argument about my teachings.
Another argument about organization,
precepts,
or lifestyles
won't be serious even they happen.
Yes!
Bhagava!
I also worry about the language
in Buddhist propagation later.
Which language should be used to preach Dharma?
Nowadays, many monks lecture Dharma
in their native languages.
Should we do so?
Dharma is really vivid.
Languages which are used to preach must be living ones.
I want to tell my followers,
both monks and lay people,
to learn and practice Dharma in their mother language.
In this way,
Dharma will be flexible
and easy to understand.
Dharma must adapt to life
and be accordingly preached.
Three months ago,
Bhagava said that he would enter Nirvana.
Now he's weak.
I have to inform everybody so that
they can look at him the last time.
Let's go.
Don't be so worried!
It is normal to be sick with a material body.
Look at everything around us!
Does anything exists forever?
Is anything made from no combination?
All will break,
disintegrate and disperse.
You shouldn't be fearful
when seeing sufferings everywhere.
Obey my teachings even
after I pass away.
If so, you'll be freed from sufferings.
Bhagava is very weak.
He's about to enter Nirvana.
Many great brethens have been enlightened
except me.
Who should I rely on in the future?
Ananda!
You shouldn't be sad.
Noble monks!
Ananda is my loyal attendant,
having been with me for many years.
He's always kind and calm,
never forgetting anything when hearing sutras.
His career will be glorious in the future.
You must control your minds well.
Don't entangle yourselves in passion.
Minds enable you to become Buddhas or animals.
Falling into mistakes,
we can become devils.
With perfect enlightenment,
we are Buddhas.
Therefore,
you must control your minds
without misleading yourself.
Ananda!
Please take me to the two sal trees at the front jungle.
The last moments are about to come.
Yes!
Life is an unexpected change
and nothing can obstruct bodily disintegration.
You should be happy to realize the laws of changes
and understand emptiness of human life;
Don't try to keep it in a unreasonable
hope that temperary things would become permanent.
My disciples!
My last moment comes.
You must understand that
death is simply the disintegration of material body.
Human bodies are born by parents
and grow up by food
without escaping from diseases and deaths.
Human bodies will be in ruins
but wisdom of enlightened one
will exist forever on the way
of learning and practice Buddhism.
If someone only sees my body,
he can't see me indeed.
Only those who absorb my advice
can see me indeed.
You shouldn't be unhappy.
You had better ask me now if having any question.
I won't be hesitated to give you answers.
Bhagava!
After you enter Nirvana,
who'll be our master?
What should I rely on?
How can we win bad people's hearts?
How can the sutra collection attain human belief?
Ananda and the great assembly!
Although my body exists no longer,
my Dharma has completely been taught.
Consider precepts as your master.
Light a torch by yourselves to go.
Begin every sutra with
"I heard that ..."
Yes!
Rely on "The four fold stages of mindfulness"
to cultivate your minds.
These are the impurity in the body,
suffering from sensations,
the impermanence of mind,
and the selflessness in Dharma.
Yes!
We'll obey Your instruction.
The World Honoured One!
Bhagava entered Nirvana 2.557 years ago;
Mahakasyapa became the first Patriarch.
He opened the first tipitaka at Grdhrakuta cave,
Mt Grdhrakuta with 500 Arhans.
The tipitaka is supported by king Ajatasatru.
