0:00:07.290,0:00:10.790 Hi this is Julie with Beadaholique.com and
Today I want to show you a faux
0:00:10.790,0:00:15.180 chain maille technique as illustrated in
this bracelet that we did for Swarovski
0:00:15.180,0:00:19.260 event at the tucson gem and mineral show.
You can see it has a really nice
0:00:19.260,0:00:21.550 thick chunky look that looks like chain
maille
0:00:21.550,0:00:23.289 but in fact it's not.
0:00:23.289,0:00:25.470 I'm going to show you how to do it.
0:00:25.470,0:00:26.789 You're going to need
0:00:26.789,0:00:28.119 a length of chain.
0:00:28.119,0:00:31.589 For the bracelet we used three feet of
chain and we cut it so it's about
0:00:31.589,0:00:33.539 six-and-a-half inches long
0:00:33.539,0:00:35.060 each length of chain.
0:00:35.060,0:00:38.410 For the demos here I'm going to use
a smaller amount so I can show you how
0:00:38.410,0:00:39.260 to do it
0:00:39.260,0:00:42.530 but you will need a chain which
consists of open links
0:00:42.530,0:00:44.519 here's a lighter weight chain so you
0:00:44.519,0:00:47.879 see that it doesn't always have to
be a chunky style chain it can be
0:00:47.879,0:00:49.050 a lighter weight
0:00:49.050,0:00:52.640 but the important characteristics of
whatever chain that you use is round
0:00:52.640,0:00:55.880 links. They don't have to be double. They
do need to be round
0:00:55.880,0:00:59.020 and they need to be open links. I show
you right here
0:00:59.020,0:01:03.280 what I mean by open links
0:01:03.280,0:01:06.920 It means that essentially your chain
consists of jump rings
0:01:06.920,0:01:10.920 You can see I can open it just like a
jump ring and each link is opened there
0:01:10.920,0:01:15.120 as opposed to being closed links which
are completely soldered together.
0:01:15.120,0:01:20.090 I could remove that link. I'm going to use
that as a jump ring in this project
0:01:20.090,0:01:21.349 I'm going to remove
0:01:21.349,0:01:25.680 the next one really quick
0:01:25.680,0:01:28.900 For the bracelet you would measure
your length
0:01:28.900,0:01:33.350 and this was about six-and-a-half
inches long and it's three segments of
0:01:33.350,0:01:35.370 chain each.
0:01:35.370,0:01:40.010 For the video I'm going to do three segments
0:01:40.010,0:01:43.490 nine links long each so I can put away
0:01:43.490,0:01:44.680 my ruler
0:01:44.680,0:01:47.770 It's important you always have a odd
number of links and that's so that your
0:01:47.770,0:01:49.249 bracelet will lay flat
0:01:49.249,0:01:51.259 You'll notice
0:01:51.259,0:01:53.200 here
0:01:53.200,0:01:54.980 we've got a flat one
0:01:54.980,0:01:58.320 a turned up one, a flat one, a turned up one
and then when you get all the way to the
0:01:58.320,0:02:00.459 end of you end in a flat one as well.
0:02:00.459,0:02:03.970 You'll be able to achieve that
by counting an odd number of links
0:02:03.970,0:02:07.600 So I'm going to do nine.
0:02:07.600,0:02:10.519 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
0:02:10.519,0:02:11.510 On the tenth one
0:02:11.510,0:02:15.310 you're not gonna cut it especially if
you're using heavy chain like this you
0:02:15.310,0:02:19.019 don't want to every use your flush cutters
on it. It will destroy them.
0:02:19.019,0:02:22.189 So I've got two pairs of chain nose pliers.
0:02:22.189,0:02:25.769 If this was a lighter chain I could use a
lighter weight pliers but here I have
0:02:25.769,0:02:26.959 Wubbers
0:02:26.959,0:02:30.609 and they're very heavy duty and very
strong.
0:02:30.609,0:02:33.679 They're going to allow me to open up
this link
0:02:33.679,0:02:38.409 I'm opening it just like a jump ring
0:02:38.409,0:02:39.819 and I'm taking it off
0:02:39.819,0:02:41.899 placing it down
0:02:41.899,0:02:47.510 Since this is double link chain I want to
up in the next one as well the same way
0:02:47.510,0:02:49.869 and remove it
0:02:49.869,0:02:53.369 I'm going to want three chain segments
equal length
0:02:53.369,0:02:56.459 I'm going to count another nine
0:02:56.459,0:02:58.680 1, 2, 3, 4,
0:02:58.680,0:03:05.680 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 on the 10th
0:03:06.429,0:03:10.040 and open the ring up
0:03:10.040,0:03:17.040 Do this until you have three equal
segments
0:03:22.019,0:03:25.319 Now that I've got my three segments and
you can actually make this as wide as
0:03:25.319,0:03:29.419 You could do 4, 5 or even 6
Dependents on your project
0:03:29.419,0:03:31.419 I just want to show you the technique here
0:03:31.419,0:03:32.729 So I've got
0:03:32.729,0:03:37.389 my jump rings which were just the
open links which I took off my chain
0:03:37.389,0:03:38.230 I'm going to
0:03:38.230,0:03:39.819 grab one
0:03:39.819,0:03:43.079 I'm going to use it just like a jump ring,
so on the end
0:03:43.079,0:03:46.319 pair of double links on one length of
chain I'm gonna put that onto the
0:03:46.319,0:03:47.919 jump ring
0:03:47.919,0:03:48.899 and also
0:03:48.899,0:03:55.199 the end double links on a second length
of chain put onto the jump ring
0:03:55.199,0:04:00.089 and now I'm going to just close it up
0:04:00.089,0:04:04.250 Now you have a choice if you want to add
a second one so each link is doubled
0:04:04.250,0:04:09.169 or just a single one. I actually want to go
with just a single right now
0:04:09.169,0:04:14.989 So pick up another one. I'm going to skip
over the next set of links
0:04:14.989,0:04:16.839 and connect
0:04:16.839,0:04:18.939 the next pair of double links
0:04:18.939,0:04:22.299 if you're counting this was the first I
skipped over the second now I'm doing
0:04:22.299,0:04:23.629 the third
0:04:23.629,0:04:28.430 I'm going to do all the odd number. So every
other one
0:04:28.430,0:04:31.819 Close these like jump rings as you go
0:04:31.819,0:04:34.469 skipping over the next one
0:04:34.469,0:04:37.809 if it helps you can look at it as the
ones that lay flat are the ones you
0:04:37.809,0:04:41.800 connect. The ones that are upright are
the ones you don't connect
0:04:41.800,0:04:48.800 It can be a little hard to see that visually
as you're doing this
0:04:52.539,0:04:56.670 If you're doing this project at home I do
want to know it will take some strength
0:04:56.670,0:04:59.659 to open and close these very heavy gauge
0:04:59.659,0:05:02.489 links of the chain. If you're using a
lighter weight chain it's not going to be a
0:05:02.489,0:05:06.400 problem at all but it does take a
little strength and getting used to
0:05:06.400,0:05:11.029 Do not use a pair of inexpensive pliers. I
cannot stress this enough. It just will
0:05:11.029,0:05:13.929 not work and it's going to really hard
on your hands
0:05:13.929,0:05:17.199 So just make sure you do have a good
pair of pliers if you are you going to be
0:05:17.199,0:05:19.499 using a heavier gauge chain
0:05:19.499,0:05:21.850 and takes a couple times to get used to
it
0:05:21.850,0:05:26.010 The first couple times I tried opening
closing was very difficult but then I just got
0:05:26.010,0:05:26.840 the hang of it
0:05:26.840,0:05:29.009 and it flowed from there
0:05:29.009,0:05:32.770 Those are a couple things to bear in mind
as you are doing this project
0:05:32.770,0:05:36.530 So I've gotten down to my end links on both
segment of chain and I'm just gonna
0:05:36.530,0:05:37.870 go ahead
0:05:37.870,0:05:42.669 and connect them like I've been doing all
the other ones
0:05:42.669,0:05:45.870 So I'm using one of my open links as a
jump ring
0:05:45.870,0:05:47.819 placing
0:05:47.819,0:05:50.669 all the links from the double link of
chains
0:05:50.669,0:05:53.479 onto there
0:05:53.479,0:05:57.050 and closing it like jump ring. So now I've
got one segment
0:05:57.050,0:05:59.979 which is done
0:05:59.979,0:06:05.789 and now I need to connect the third segment
the same way and I actually used five
0:06:05.789,0:06:06.619 jump rings
0:06:06.619,0:06:08.169 which were the links of chain
0:06:08.169,0:06:10.120 bet you notice I only have three
0:06:10.120,0:06:12.830 from where I separated the chain so I need
more
0:06:12.830,0:06:16.020 and I'm just gonna go back to my cut
length of chain
0:06:16.020,0:06:17.889 and open up some more
0:06:17.889,0:06:18.869 links
0:06:18.869,0:06:21.680 So I need two more
0:06:21.680,0:06:28.680 Open them up
0:06:30.879,0:06:33.050 and now I have five
0:06:33.050,0:06:37.930 and I'm going to connect them the exact
same way
0:06:37.930,0:06:41.629 The end two links from your cut length of
chain and I say cut length
0:06:41.629,0:06:44.490 I just mean separated because we are not
cutting this chain
0:06:44.490,0:06:45.749 with cutters
0:06:45.749,0:06:49.080 Go onto this side. You see we've
already got
0:06:49.080,0:06:50.529 the one here
0:06:50.529,0:06:53.370 that gives you a guide as to where you
need to place
0:06:53.370,0:06:55.999 this link
0:06:55.999,0:07:02.999 We're going to close it up
0:07:03.649,0:07:05.400 and we're just gonna go
0:07:05.400,0:07:12.400 along the edge here again doing every
other one
0:07:13.139,0:07:16.769 and you can see this one already had a
link in it so that's a good q again that
0:07:16.769,0:07:21.009 that is going to be the one you're going to
connect to
0:07:34.349,0:07:35.349 Last
0:07:35.349,0:07:37.960 ring to connect the segment
0:07:37.960,0:07:41.470 it's going to connect it the same as the
others
0:07:41.470,0:07:44.339 through those double links
0:07:44.339,0:07:51.339 and then through the double links on
the piece of chain next to it
0:07:52.909,0:07:55.489 close it up
0:07:55.489,0:07:58.859 and you have your faux chain maille
0:07:58.859,0:08:00.789 One quick thing I want to show you
0:08:00.789,0:08:04.699 before we sign off on this video
I wanna show you how you would go about
0:08:04.699,0:08:09.629 attaching a clasp to a project such as
this
0:08:09.629,0:08:13.650 We've got a tube
clasp here instead of using
0:08:13.650,0:08:16.740 the heavier links I just used some ten
millimeter
0:08:16.740,0:08:20.300 black finish jump rings which are
smaller and I just made it work. So
0:08:20.300,0:08:23.909 whatever type of clasp you have just
line it up with the side
0:08:23.909,0:08:28.749 and apply jump rings where need be. So
that is how you create a faux chain
0:08:28.749,0:08:32.620 maille look and you can do this with bracelets
necklaces or anything you like
0:08:32.620,0:08:37.660 and make it as long as you like and as
wide as you like. Just remember to always
0:08:37.660,0:08:41.050 have an odd number of chain links when
you're doing this and make sure that
0:08:41.050,0:08:45.149 your chain consist of round links so it
looks like chain maille jump rings
0:08:45.149,0:08:48.439 and just make sure that they are open
links and not close links.
