Hi, I am Ben Bowers. I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Tennessee and I am working
with reclaimed asphalt materials in paving. So one thing we have to be concerned about
in engineering and transportation is the economy. We need to make sure we are not overspending
and one really cool opportunity we found with that is reusing the old asphalt on a road
after the road started cracking and failing and creating potholes.
We can recycle the asphalt using a bit of new asphalt and replace some of the new asphalt
with the new stuff. By doing that we save a lot of money and so
what we are researching is the best way to do that.
I feel very fortunate to have fallen into the transportation realm.
I believe that is where I am exactly supposed to be.
But I think that I could have also found that a lot earlier in my high school career.
I also would always encourage you to not be nervous about taking the next level of courses
if it sounds intimidating. A lot of times if you are enjoying it, if
you really enjoy math, dont be afraid to take the upper level math.
If you focus on getting youre work done on time you will still have time to hang out
afterwards. You will really be better off and better prepared
for the future. I think if I was to go back, those are some
of the things I would do differently.
