Flash flood wreaks havoc in Kentucky, USA. A thunderstorm bringing heavy rainfall and
high winds starting at 4 pm on Saturday afternoon, July 17, resulted in flash floods by 1 am
Sunday in Pike County, with rising waters leading to two deaths overnight. Overall,
as many as 10,000 people were affected as some 200 homes were damaged or destroyed with
roads and bridges left in need of serious repair. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear declared
a state of emergency, while crews aided residents in numerous rescues and evacuations. Thousands
of people lost power, and around 4,000 residents also were without water. Distribution centers
have been set up in several places to make water, food, clothing, and other necessities
available to those in need.
Governor Beshear and all rescue personnel, we are grateful for your caring actions to
provide safety and comfort to the storm-affected. Our prayers that such severe weather patterns
are eased through humanity’s increased care for our planet
