[SolarWinds® IP Address Manager Training] [Part 1: Terminology, Views, and Resources]
In this section we'll start by talking about key IPAM terminology,
then we'll take a look at IPAM views and resources.
And after that, we'll look at the default views that come with any installations
of SolarWinds' IPAM.
Finally, we'll look at key resources for effectively using IPAM in your environment.
IPAM uses four different statuses to describe IP addresses on the network.
It's important to have these terms straight in order to accurately interpret
what IPAM is telling you.
The first status is Available, designated by a grey icon.
This is an address that is not being used and has not been seen active
on the network in a while.
The next status is Used, designated by a yellow icon.
This is an IP address that is assigned out to a device and is currently active on the network.
The third status is Transient, designated by a blue icon.
This is used to describe any IP addresses that have been seen on a network recently
but were not in use during the last scan.
This state is commonly seen for devices that are powered off regularly
or devices that routinely enter and exit the network.
It is most commonly seen in DHCP networks.
The fourth status is Reserved, designated by a purple icon.
Typically, Reserved is used to show other administrators that an IP address
has been allocated for use but may not currently be active on the network.
It is also used for the network and broadcast addresses on a given subnet.
In addition, red, yellow, and green icons are used to represent the capacity status
of subnets, with red being critical -- at least 80% of all IP addresses used;
yellow being a warning -- 60-80% of available IP addresses used;
and green--or good status -- less than 60% of IP addresses used.
You will find similar color codings for supernets, as well as DHCP scopes.
IPAM--like other Orion products--
comes with a custom set of pre-configured views designed to give you useful information
right away for managing your IPs.
IPAM views are accessed through the Orion web console in the IP Addresses tab.
The first view that comes up when you log in will be the IPAM Summary view.
Like other Orion products,
this is an overview of the subnet information including Top 10 Subnets by IP Address,
and DHCP scopes.
The next view across is the Manage Subnets & IP Addresses view,
which provides specific IP and subnet information
and allows admins to change the IP status, as well as give them the ability to provide
additional IP information and custom properties.
Finally, the DHCP & DNS Monitoring view provides detailed views into the DHCP servers,
scopes, DNS information, and provides an interface
for making changes to the DHCP servers.
As with other Orion products,
resources are organized within views, and all resources provide drill-down capabilities.
Within the IPAM Summary view,
you will find the Top 10 Subnets by % IP Address Space Used,
Top DHCP Scopes, and a search box used to find any specific IP, host, or VLAN.
This provides a very straightforward and effective summary of IP address usage
by subnet, giving the user an immediate view into areas of interest.
Defined subnets are listed in decreasing order of percent space used
and provide the number of IP addresses available in the subnet
and how many of those addresses are used.
The next resource in the summary view is the Top 10 DHCP Scopes
by IP address space usage.
This is similar to the Top 10 Subnets resource previously discussed,
except this resource focuses on DHCP scopes.
Any of these resources can also be customized to show top 15,
top 20, or whatever value makes sense.
As with all Orion family summary views,
there's also a Last 25 Events resource specific to the product.
