The hapu of Te Uri o Hau has been angered
by the ruling of the Environment Court
which went in favour of Crest Energy's proposal
to place marine turbines in the Kaipara.
The tribe argued that they will damage the natural ecosystem.
It's a stamp on their authority and risk to their marine treasures.
The Environment Court has recommended
the Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson approve a consent
to develop the marine turbines in Kaipara.
Conditions attached to the consent
include environmental monitoring and testing.
It's a battle that's been going on for five years.
Crest says if it is approved it will be at least three years
before the commercial operation will begin.
The tribe says they will appeal to the minister
to stop the project from going ahead.
Te Uri o Hau has 15 days to make an appeal to the Environment Court
but the ultimate discussion is up to the Minister of Conservation.
