All right! Just wanted to check in with you all. We're going to be starting week three
soon, and I just wanted to encourage you. By the time you see this, you probably will
be finished or almost finished with the peer assessment for week two, the first week of
the writing instruction. And next week during week 3, we'll be getting to the halfway point
of the course. And it's so great to see so many of you still working in the course. That's
just wonderful to see such learning happening right before our eyes as instructors, and
I hope you're noticing how you're improving as a writer.
So a couple of words about the peer assessment. There are so many of you, and it's really
hard for us as instructors. We wish we could read every single submission, but with so
many people in the class obviously we can't do that. So that's why we have a peer review,
but peer review is also an essential part of learning the craft of writing. Any writing
teacher in their classes almost always has a peer review session at some point in the
semester where you would learn and learn from others and give feedback for yourself. So
remember you really want to give meaningful feedback. Do the best you can, but it is peer
review. A big part of your learning here is going to be giving the peer review rather
than merely receiving it because you will be reading others' writings and really noticing
and having to analyze how you view that piece of writing.
One more thing about peer review is that when we teach peer review, we always tell our students
it's very important to give the peer review in the way that you would like to receive
it. So most of the time that means being kind and considerate as well as being honest and
doing the best you can. So please remember that honor code. Give it some time. Read and
think carefully through that assignment. Remember also that journals will help you
as you build toward the peer reviewed assignments for each week. And you might find it helpful
to keep an electronic journal because many students will actually see their sentences
as they're typed out onto an electronic screen differently than in handwriting. But ultimately
remember MOOCs are a learning environment. So we know many of you are obsessed and concerned
with points and getting all the credits, but really if you are learning and focusing on
your learning, the points should be a logical outcome of that. So keep working. It's great
to see you working through the assignments, and we'll check in with you next week.
