Hi my name's Conrad I'm one of the house engineers here at the Jam Gallery.
Primarily the front end of the system is a Roland M480 and its also set up to an R1000
48 track recorder, so that gives you an idea of some of the components.
One of the advantages with the Roland gear and interfacing with this place is offering
a number of opportunities for recording and also utilizing recording to get a better sound
check, thereby utilizing the artists and performers for less, keeping them vibed up for the show
and not draining their energy before they actually hit the stage. So one of the benefits would
be for example recording a quick sound check, asking everyone to have a break, grab a drink,
dinner whatever. Come back, and in the interim time be able to loop that recording and get
the stage sound and the foldback fine-tuned as well as front of house. Gating, compressors
are all options on each and every channel as well as effects. This particular place
has up to nine foldback sends which certainly gives the artist a number of opportunities,
so it provides an opportunity to do more by using the artists less during the sound check.
Yeah the Digital Snake offers the flexibility of re-routing signals so it is possible for
example to have a number of artists plugged in and re-route those signals to dedicated
channels on the desk. So for example, you know, you've got three different bands each
with their own bass player -- you've got three bass players that in turn can be routed to
the same bass channel that will effectively have a better idea of EQ, compression and
stage sounds.
There's been world music, there are Latin nights here every Thursday at the moment.
There's also been a number of reggae African bands, pop bands, we've had bands that only
have horns for example like the Brassholes -- they were very interesting to deal with
on the night. So because the sound system is so good I think you can effectively keep
everyone happy as opposed to just having a rock and roll system and just taking care
of a conventional band with you know drums bass two guitars vocals. There's a lot of
flexibility that this system can offer which opens up musical talent across the board.
Oh well today's a little bit different we've had a live music video shoot, where the band
performed live, were recorded and also mimed to that live recording for a few choice shots
a bit later and that again utilized the system as well as the Roland gear for recording and
re-routing and re-patching. So I think it's been fairly successful, there were smiles
at the end of the day weren't there? There were smiles, yes and I think if you can finish
a day with smiles at the end that's good.
