bjbj THE SEAGULL S SONG The sun rose early one morning and painted the horizon a golden
yellow. The forest echoed with the sound of the merry twittering of little birds as they
prepared for the events of the day. Little seagull fledglings stretched their grey downy
wings as they enjoyed the warmth of the sun s rays and the forest music. Waves lapped
gently at the rocks on the home shore. Little Susie seagull listened to her siblings squawking
and dreamed of life in the middle on the forest. When she grew up she wanted to be the bird
with the most beautiful song in the forest. Susie wanted to live on the highest branch
in the pine tree from where she could see the whole world. Today was an exciting day,
as mother gull had promised to take her brood out for their first long swim, right to the
beginning of the rapids. Susie was in a hurry to learn how to swim and fly so that she could
she go off to look for the highest pine tree in the forest where she s make her home. The
seagull siblings hopped down from the home rock into the water, holding their beaks.
They swam eagerly in the direction of the rapids while the mother gull flew, dipping
and swooping, in the sky above them. Mother gull warned them and told them off constantly.
Susie was annoyed by mother gull s loud and harsh voice. Why doesn t mother use her voice
as beautifully as the little birds in the forest? That kind of screeching takes all
the fun out of this swim trip, she thought to herself. Right next to the rapids, Susie
noticed some movement. A quick and nimble, white furry thing with black beady eyes was
watching the brood of seagull babies as they swam by. Susie wanted to say hello to the
skinny furry thing without wings. Perhaps it could tell her how to get to the highest
pine tree in the forest. Susie left her bothers and sisters and swam closer to the furry creature.
She said hello and asked whether the creature knew of anyone who could give her singing
lessons. The white creature showed its small sharp teeth and with a pink tongue it licked
its whiskered lips. The creature s black eyes flashed cunningly. It dove smoothly into the
water and in a flash it had grabbed Susie. Susie felt herself being pulled under the
water. The mother gull had noticed that Susie was missing. From high in the sky she saw
the struggle in the water and started to screech at the top of her lungs. She hovered over
the fight in the water and the swooped down into the water. The white creature got scared
and let go of Susie. Susie rose to the surface and her mother s familiar and comforting screeching.
Then Susie understood why her mother had such a loud voice. Mother wanted to protect her
children from cunning white furry creatures. Mother didn t want anything bad to happen
to her children. The moral of the tale: Mother screeches because she wants to keep her children
safe. hK}/ hK}/ gdK}/ THE SEAGULL S SONG Marita Normal Marita Microsoft Word 10.0 THE SEAGULL
