Gino Tubaro: Getting lost in inventions
I knew, when was a little boy, that I could still develop things
without dismantling what I had at home.
I could find a simple screwdriver,
get a speaker, take it out,
and then stick it to a box, matchbox,
and after joining that, I had a screw collector, for example.
So then I realized that I could keep on developing things,
creating things, without buying too many things from a workshop.
Then, when I was 13 years old, I made this.
This is a surge protector that prevents getting electrocuted.
What you are watching is this: that surge protector,
the same one, I´m replacing it now. Instead of connecting to
220, I connect it to a 9-volt
as if I were getting electrocuted, the surge protector switches off.
So you just don´t get electrocuted when this is connected.
I don´t connect it to 220 since touching it, will hurt for a moment.
Then I believed I could develop things so easily,
and I felt an awesome adrenaline.
As you see, this is my workshop. I don´t need a workshop worth
thousand million pesos. I don´t need to study at the best schools.
Neither do I need to be an "astronautical" engineer in whatever...
In this trip I felt the adrenaline of being awarded a prize.
This chubby, little boy, is me.
So... I set myself a bigger goal: Sound Cube.
Sound Cube is a musical instrument where you can create and
transform on paper what you imagine when you draw it in pencil,
and can transform it into sound.
Yes, the sound comes to life...
and this is Sound Cube.
Sound Cube: when drawing, you will understand what
your drawing really represents.
I realized that I had to keep on developing it,
when I took it to the electronics floor, where I study, and that
an invention doesn't have to be the toughest thing in the world,
doesn't have to be very complex, it has to be simple.
So, when I introduced it to my friends, they weren´t interested in
that it was complex, but that it was simple and easy to understand.
That it is useful, that you can use it to have fun.
I introduced it to them, and now I want to introduce it to you.
I think you know the #TEDxRP hashtag...
so give me a second, that I´m going to connect it.
Don´t worry about the noise.
(To the cameraman) You don´t worry either.
What happened: I drew the TED hashtag.
So, if I want to compose a simple song...
(Applause)
Thanks.
I ask you this: How will the TED hashtag sound?
Here we have it.
We all can be creative. As I said, It´s not necessary
to attend the top schools.
With this, I can understand new basic concepts of electronics,
I can keep on learning with my friends...
Being an inventor doesn´t mean to be shut away in a basement,
"working" 24 hours on an idea. No.
It´s necessary to meet people.
I want to deliver a message to you: Be curious.
Don´t be interested in just one topic,
do research in many things.
To me being an inventor is like an art.
You can simply create things, get into new worlds,
without the need to study 24 hours a day.
I want to show you a picture.
This is a garden.
It´s lightened, yes.
The person who is using these lamps is not going to pay anything.
The lamps are not connected to 220 either.
Neither are they connected to a battery.
These lamps don´t consume anything.
They just consume the energy from the environment.
So what I invented is called "Energy Thief".
"Energy Thief" is not literally a thief: it is recycler.
So in the picture I just showed you, the one of the garden,
there is energy that is radiating.
It comes from radios, satellites, and things from the environment
and we are wasting it.
Well, what this device does, this beautiful device,
is to transform the energy. Yes, to transform it.
So you can have constant energy...
In this case I have half a battery. Yes, half a battery.
Well, imagine you have a solar panel that lasts 8 hours
delivering energy constantly.
This can deliver energy constantly for 24 hours.
Imagine you can charge a cell phone connecting several at once.
If not, I show you a chart from a slide...
The chart shows the voltage delivered by a battery and the voltage
delivered by an "Energy Thief".
It delivers energy constantly,
while the battery is getting discharged.
This is basically an "Energy Thief".
(Applause)
To finish this up... I hope you enjoyed my brief summary...
You already know what an inventor is. I want to set out a challenge.
I love doing the impossible.
These are things you don´t have to be afraid of.
I hope you are not afraid of them.
Let´s be the new conquerors of the new technologies.
Let´s invent the new world.
Thank you very much.
