More than one billion people worldwide do not have a home that would provide them with decent living conditions and a sense of security.
In Poland alone, up to 6.5 million people live in substandard housing conditions.
One organization has been helping impoverished families on every continent for 30 years: Habitat for Humanity.
In Poland, the organization has built homes for 103 families and carried out many renovations.
On November 9, 2010, the residents of Józefos³aw and the media witnessed dreams come true for another six families.
Priest: Bless this house, and watch over its inhabitants.
So now accept these keys to your homes and to your hearts.
The national Polish media were present during this joyous day.
The story was covered by TVN Warsaw, Polsat News, TVP Info and Polish Radio; the Polish Press Agency relayed it to a number of web portals and newspapers.
The Organization was also invited to appear before morning edition of "Coffee or Tea" aired on Polish National Television.
After the families settled into their new homes, they expressed gratitude to Habitat For Humanity for changing their lives.
Maria Sadurska: In total, we worked six years for this home.
We are pleased with our new home, because until now we have been relying on the support of friends who let us stay in an unfurnished home, and now we have our own.
Habitat For Humanity is a Christian organization, and so it often receives generous support from the Church.
The land in Józefos³aw was sold at an affordable price by the Dominicans.
Habitat for Humanity's houses are built simple and lasting but also affordable.
The construction in Józefos³aw was funded by Habitat for Humanity and by donations from sponsors.
Each family also had to pay 10% of the property value, the balance to be paid regularly in interest-free installments over 20 years.
The houses were built by skilled workers and volunteers.
Contributing the most to them, however, were the families themselves, working more than 3,000 hours.
Tasks requiring professional skills were performed by qualified teams, and the entire project was overseen by a construction manager and foremen.
Habitat For Humanity not only builds new homes for the needy, but it also renovates old ones.
For example, they renovated a building in Warsaw's Praga district, and were funded by their key partner, Daimler AG.
The work was carried out by volunteers, employees of Mercedes-Benz Bank, Mercedes-Benz Leasing and Daimler Fleet Management,
Company managers and even the president of Mercedes Fleet Management and Daimler Leasing Poland, David Dyson.
Habitat For Humanity exists because of people of good will
Who support the Organization with their labor, financial resources and materials needed to build and renovate houses.
Thank you.
