As a journalist, what I most enjoy is writing about the history of tourism
because you cannot understand the history of the Canary Islands without the history
of its tourism.
And not just its recent history, but all of its history,
even that which is unknown, its most ancient history.
The prehistory of the Canary Islands is linked to the history of tourism
because that's where the Canary Islands brand of tourism originates, the brand of
good climate, health and nature.
We are the main tourist destination in the world
as regards the number of times a tourist returns. Which may even be three or four times in the
same year.
Sixty or seventy per cent of the tourist movement patterns in the world today
have to do with sun and beach tourism. We have sun all year round
and we have a variety of beaches and, on top of that, the quality of those
beaches is extraordinary.
Without inventing anything new, I would define the Islands as the "garden of earthly delights".
And, if we wish to be a little more poetic, I could say they are the "garden of sunlight"
because of the beauty and contrast of the landscapes,
together with the sun which shines all year round.
I believe there are places here which are considered as having
the highest number of sunlight hours on the planet, per year.
