Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about right now is the
importance of our defensive backs in pass coverage. That is going to be their main focus.
Now, they will come up occasionally and help out in a run defense. But their first responsibility
is don't get beat deep and you've got to cover the wide receivers. Now we're going to have
4 defensive backs that we're going to talk about. First of all we've got our corner backs,
which are going to be strait up in man to man coverage with the outside receivers. We've
got one on each side. Then we've got these two guys back here, this is going to be our
free safety. And the free safety's job is, don't let anything go long. He's got the long
part of the field, and then he's going to come up and help on this side once he realizes
that nobody is streaking down the middle of the field that he has to pick up and cover.
So this guy got to be very athletic, he's got to be able to read the field. Then we've
got a strong safety on this side. And a strong safety's doing the same thing, except he's
on the strong side, so he's probably going to picking up a receiver, like the tight end
coming down across the middle. So these guys have got pass coverage responsibilities and
our outside corner backs have outside pass responsibilities. And that's the first thing
they do. As soon as the ball is snapped, and this guy pushes off the line, he's got to
be in a back peddle, he's got to pick up what's going on, and he's got to stay on this man.
Our outside guys are in man to man coverage; our free safety and our strong safety are
picking up and helping out. And that's how we use our defensive backs against a pass
coverage.
