It's hoped that a healthy living programme
will help the community of Manurewa
not only become fit and healthy,
but strengthen community ties.
At South Auckland's Manurewa Marae
healthy foods were put to the test.
Pere Wihongi has more.
Te Tai Tonga is one of Manurewa Marae's haka groups,
and they're working together as a team
on the road to good health with hopes to change the community.
It's a challenge
for Manurewa families
to get fit and healthy
so that people can come to places like the marae
and eat healthy foods.
It's the fourth week of the 8-week long challenge.
They're tackling things like weight loss,
addictions and dieting.
It's something we can do in our everyday lives.
That's one of the things
I'd love to add to our daily routine at Manurewa Marae,
and hopefully expand out to other marae.
They managed to flip the #NekNominate craze
into a mountain climbing challenge.
On that climb
we nominated the haka group Toka Tu Manawa,
so the challenge has been set.
It's an excellent project.
It's about healthy living, healthy families,
healthy communities, and healthy haka groups.
There are high hopes as well.
We want to extend this challenge, not just for 8 weeks,
but for the rest of the year and years to come.
And to be able to teach our children healthy eating habits.
Bringing communities together to stand strong on their marae.
Pere Wihongi, Te Karere.
