I definitely plan to watch the Olympics this year.
I'm still not interested in watching people go down hills.
I will be watching the Winter Olympics. I especially like speed skating.
My favorite part about the Olympics probably is that it brings the whole globe together,
regardless of what's going on in each individual country.
You can really stand behind the athletes that you're sending, watch them compete on a world-scale.
It represents something more than just sports.
It brings out a bit of a nationalism that isn't really frowned upon.
I think it symbolizes a kind of unity. I mean, as a political science major I find that really
important especially with everything going on in Russia right now.
It's really going to be interesting to see the kind of unity that comes out of it.
Russia is the host and they have some laws that aren't exactly friendly toward the LGBTQ
population. It's considered propaganda to promote LGBTQ lifestyles.
This is Russia's territory so obviously their cultural values and their laws apply.
I know they select these countries years in advance but it definitely seems like a very
charged environment.
I think boycotting the Olympics is the worst thing you could do. Avoiding the problem is
not going to solve it.
Just attending it itself is helping to promote what the Olympics stand for. Since race isn't
an issue, sexuality shouldn't be one either.
I find it very good that we have Olympians going there who are gay and lesbian.
It would be, I think, a really great thing if everyone could put it aside and Russia
could do their part in helping the cause.
They're supposed to foster community and, I think, if you shut out one group of people,
I think, that defeats the entire purpose.
