Welcome to this week’s Cruiser Customizing tip of the week with me, Kyle Bradshaw.
There is two main reasons that people change their grips. Usually for comfort or for style.
As you can see here on my VTX, I’ve got the Kuryakyn ISO grips installed for comfort.
And Uvay on his RoadGlide has got the Batastini Holy Grips.
As far as comfort goes, there’s really four main classifications or four types of comfort
grips.
A lot of smaller male riders or female riders have a problem because their hands are small
and once they throw a glove on their hand it’s really hard to grip a large grip. So
you can see this thumb grip here is really thin but will fit on the same bar that this
ISO grip will fit.
As you can see this thumb grip is much thinner and much narrower than the ISO grip. Better
to benefit riders will smaller hands.
Another reason that people modify their grips or swap their grips out is for vibration dampening.
As you can see, this RoadGlide up here has this Holy Grip, which is a solid chrome grip--this
grip is not going to handle vibration well. Most of the others down here have some sort
of rubber which then isolates the vibration from your hand.
One of the second most common reasons people swap out their grip is for vibration dampening.
If you notice, on our website, we have a lot of grips that say “ISO grips” or “ISO
pegs” or things of that nature.
ISO simply means isolation--isolating your hands from the vibration of the engine and
your motorcycle. Most all grip manufacturers have some sort of vibration dampening grip
and it’s just a matter of style.
Another main reason that people swap their grips out or make grip modification would
be for heat.
Here we’ve got two different options.
This is a grip that will replace your stock grip, plug into the battery, and provide your
motorcycle hand grips with heat.
If you like your current grips and don’t want to make a change, there’s a product
called Heat Demon that then slips inside your handlebar, then wires to the bar, stock grip,
or whatever you’ve already upgraded to.
It’s a really neat way to go.
The major benefit of heated grips is being able to ride in cooler temperatures while
keeping your hands and fingertips warm which allows you to have the dexterity you need
in order to properly operate your motorcycle. For all you Cruiser Riders out there, comfort
may be okay, but style is the a number one reason that we do a lot of the modifications
that we do to our motorcycles.
Now style can really fall into two categories. Chrome, which is the ultimate badass cruiser
grip, or theme.
As you can see here we’ve got a couple different themes. We’ve got the spider theme, we’ve
got the holy theme, we have the pilot theme, we’ve got the ribbed theme, flamed theme.
In closing I’d like to say the multiple examples I have here in front of me is still
a very small selection of grips available out there for your bike, so take a look at
the website and search “grips,” you’re going to find grips for comfort, grips for
style, and grips that will make your machine badass.
Take control of your motorcycle with the addition of custom grips. Check out grips from Kuryakyn,
Show Chrome Accessories, Pro One, Behrends, Arlen Ness, Highway Hawk, and many more.
