demands what do you make of a possibility between ashley judd image
mcconnell for the u_s_ senate in kentucky
i think is interesting that it's uh... it's certainly wounded i think given
mitch mcconnell's unpopularity in sort of
the responsibilities seem to bear for some of the roller failures of the
republican leadership
he may be something was also really keep in mind
i think it was back in it was it was back in two thousand and when president
obama first ran
there was a tight race there in kentucky they're not the democrats are knocking
have those coattails com twenty four teammate
it's gonna be a midterm election on like sort of a presidential elections when
democrats can maybe in shop in kentucky
answer of the planet
blue collar economic populism of the candidate like
uh... like jack conway back in uh... back in twenty ten even
but
uh... i think uh...
here's my concern mike my concern is just that
ashley judd it may not be
the best candidate for this spot from the perspective of democratic party
she
kentucky doesn't connect democratic party when you do succeed appears to be
they succeed with the coalition of urban liberals yes
african-americans yes
but also sort of
blue collar perhaps coal-mining community types
people that are interested in a government that's
one look out for them protect them from the big banks from corporations perhaps
protective so sharon medicare
and i don't know that
the *** the serve spitting image of that is an out of town or
no matter how proud he makes the resin security
i could be wrong
but sort of the the things that made her vulnerable metro that
would really make a roller balding of
in any event perhaps even the democratic primary
when i'm wondering is
is where is your in your mother
in this way i think that
you sold out on the show number of times
he's an impressive
spokesman aren't out of the national stage
but who really tends to sort of kentucky's local concerns was made of so
major player in congress
i'm with you i think the democrats might be wise to get some it has been around
politics who understands
politics anniversary grassroots level actor john yarmouth to run against mitch
mcconnell life i begin again that would probably a better race for the democrats
but it certainly in terms of raising money
possibly in attracting a lot of i mean it's it's a gamble going out to john
ensign gamble that could pay off or it could hurt in a big way
one of the reasons that i think republicans are so concerned about your
job as there was recently a a public policy polling
uh... group survey
that give the about a hypothetical match-up between
uh... anna connally ashley judd and in that match up uh... mitch mcconnell led
by only four points
and it also show that mitch mcconnell is the most unpopular center in the united
states he's got a fifty-five percent disapproval rating
compared to just thirty seven percent net approval rating in other words he's
he's underwater by eighteen points
uh... you're talking about the races which mcconnell had in two thousand
innate he had defeated democrat bruce lunsford
by six points and that was at the time when john mccain carried kentucky by
sixteen points evento by the way mit romney carried by twenty three point so
there's a certain dragnet mitch mcconnell has
uh... and
a couple of the other things about the actually juggling and she's a graduate
of the university of kentucky although she got a m
a masters degree from the kennedy school harvard
uh... if she's been very active in several causes including aids prevention
women's equality anti-poverty initiatives
uh... she free flowing attends university of kentucky basketball games
in anybody's really worth college basketball knows
that if you show up at rupp arena that is worth at least twenty-five points
right there in terms are appalling
uh... her ex-husband was a three-time winner of the new noblesville a five
hundred a real friend katie uh... although they just announce their
divorce so she may have some issue in terms of by her family but uh... and
then vital thing about the poll
that her favorability rating according this poll was uh... forty two percent
bomber unfavorable rating was
thirty six percent
and then twenty two percent of voters are not sure which is why you get the
republican
then thinking very nervous
about ashley judd as she gets out of steam sure is a lot of money
and also may feel
mike ok we needed to find her before she is an opportunity to define herself we
need to go after the twenty two percent a don't really know she has
and oh by the way let's make this early on let's make this
a referendum not on which mcconnell what let's make it about ashley judd and
whether kentucky should welcome
hollywood liberal celebrity in as the
and extent of her from kentucky so fascinating fastening stuff and amp
you know i in the day i i i i got your point i think i think john yarmouth
would actually be better for our politics as he was running on the
democratic side it is against mitch mcconnell but there is something
kind of coordinates or just in terms of a rock star power this would be are
heavyweight
match-up between mitch mcconnell and ashley judd with them both representing
very different
aspects of who we are as americans
it'd any lookout
at this stage is very early to tell i don't know that johnnie on it has been
hole because i don't think that he's interested in it in the race at all
but certainly he also represents louisville which is is the sort of the
most cosmopolitan the rope or the state
he he he may very well and run into the same issues
without the kind of name recognition africa has
and it is sort of interesting i think that we tend to
to sort of pigeonhole
women in particularly within celebrities without political experience
as kind of
well it's all of us are parents all of the same
shows a masters in in in public policy from harvard that that that's that says
something she's obviously
extremely intelligent accomplishment
you know a celebrity gets involved in politics at this level
rather than at the level of let's say a pet cause
it
and again i don't want to denigrate the pay causes them to step in here but
i think
at think that that this is where the second load and and and you know i i i
knew for ten a m skeptical side but
really it is just a matter of of what what sort of um...
demographics are targeting what crossed edits arguing
for all i know uh... ashley judd may be very popular among sort of the blue
collar set in kentucky
obviously call is a big issue out there and and mayor bloomberg a number of
sort of his allies in the natural gas industry have teamed up with
sourav bowl coalition the sierra club
mayor bloomberg and natural gas lobby
are trying to shut down the coal industry in west virginia and kentucky
by
by sort of a affectively
uh... muscling them out of business
anime you know in in the lawns are obviously that that's very good for us
in terms of bunning climate change in the short term there a lot of sort of
place would you give people a spent their lives working in in these jobs
that pay decent wages and benefits
that stand to see
really drastic
economic problems and
you know if if this sort of plan succeeds
and that that uh... that's an issue that i will be looking for in in this
kentucky race because
it's gonna take a smart
strong economically sensitive democrat
to not to not sort of
just make
this initiative just about the environment but to make this an issue
about people
and create a real transition plan it's if we are really moving away from kal
agree and i think it is very complex issues that need you know complexes
solutions and if you have suffered ashley judd is willing to a jump in
and understand the details of the nuances in the complexities of
everything that's great and there's some indications that she's willing to do
that i a century a great meeting with folks over emily's list
to talk about their her political perspective and what she's willing to do
which is going to learn and and i think if she's willing to sort of take the
stuff seriously and not to see this as using a star power celebrity power but
actually get in there try to understand these issues and then make a persuasive
case
more power to her ashley judd
