Three, two
Hello everyone I'm Sunny Bee
And I'm Sylvia Marie
And we're on Fourth Avenue, in Tucson Arizona
My favorite part of the entire city
Let's get started because it's Sunny Out...side, in Tucson and Phoenix! (laughter)
music
Tucson is a city in the American southwest, in the state of Arizona
(music)
Although surrounded by desert and its famous saguaro cactuses
it's always remarkable at just how green
And beautiful this desert is
Easily observed as Sylvia and I visit
Tucson's La Encantada shopping district
Allowing us to soak up the sun while we soak up the deals
Who'd guess that Tucson is one of North America's oldest cities?
It was part of Spain when it was settled in the 1700's
It became part of the USA in the 1850's.
(Swoosh sound)
Next, Sylvia and I ventured into Central Tucson,
To it's lively and vibrant Fourth Avenue district
which is nestled between Downtown
and the University of Arizona main campus
Sylvia recommended this adorable cafe
right on the avenue
Where the staff
and fellow customers
were as warm as the food

Darrell and his life partner Steven
moved to Tucson ten years ago
from San Francisco, in the US state of California.
San Francisco is considered one of North America's most vibrant cities
Darryl and Steve loved it there, but they love Tucson too.
Here are a few of their tips for visitors to Tucson.
Come in the winter
It's fabulous. We have the best winters
Nine months out of the year, it's great.
Monsoon season in July and August can be a little much though
Fourth Avenue is a great street
They have street fairs -- two a year
And it's just fun the people down here
And it's not far from the University
so it gets a young crowd
It's just really nice
Hiking the mountains is great
We like to hike a lot
On the west, well on both sides
We're surrounded by mountains
so it's really wonderful
There are lots of great restaurants here
Menedito
What other restaurants do we like?
San Carlos Grill
Lots of good Mexican
Wildflower
Zona 78 for happy hour, perfect
Thanks Darrell and Steven!
B-Line is also one of their favorite places.
Sylvia and I discovered why
as we enjoyed a leisurely and delicious meal
(glasses toasting)
Next, we headed west into the mountains
on the far outskirts of Tucson
It's called Gates Pass
And it's famous for providing
Some of the city's most impressive sunset views
A wonderful, wonderful call you made Miss Sylvia
to come up here
I almost thought we wouldn't make it
Yes, yes
So we get to enjoy a few minutes of the sunset
as it falls behind the mountains
What are these, the Catalina?
Tucson, the Catalina are over there
Tucson mountais, really, really wonderful
I said Fourth Avenue is my favorite part of Tucson
But I highly recommend coming to Gates Pass
if you come to Tucson.
You won't regret it!
a fabulous way to end an evening
(music)
Wow, isn't that absolutely beautiful?
Gates Pass actually dates back to the late 1800's
So again, if you're in Tucson, you've gotta go there.
But please also be careful
as the Pass is a very winding, curving and sloping road
and there have been numerous serious accidents.
Our story continues now with the day before,
when I actually arrived in Arizona.
I spent much of that day on another road
That's Interstate highway 10
Which connects Tucson
to Phoenix, which is Arizona's capital and largest city
(music)
The two hour drive north from Tucson to Phoenix
takes you through sun-soaked desert plains
and mountain passes,
Truly capturing the essence of the American Southwest.
It was evening by the time I reached Arizona's largest city
So I went straight to my hotel
I always enjoy staying at Westin Downtown Phoenix
It's primarily because the staff there
always seems to give me un-requested room upgrades.
So I'm all settled here in my hotel room
and ready to call it an evening.
We'll begin Part Two of this video
bright and early tomorrow, here in Phoenix.
Phoenix is a newer city.
Settled in the mid-1800's.
Unlike Tucson, it was never a part of Spain or Mexico.
And has always been part of the USA.
it's a brand new morning!
The sun is shining beautifully
I slept beautifully
And I am ready to begin my first full day in Phoenix!
The day begins with a leisurely breakfast with Justin
An old college friend
Now living in Metro Phoenix
He loves it out here
And says its a wonderful place to visit
Well in addition to Downtown, which is nice to walk around
If it's not 110 out here
The Biltmore area is great if you like to shop
And you want to check out an upscale restaurant
There's also a movie theatre
The AMC that has the dine-in movie seating
That's really nice and fun
And not much more expensive than a regular movie
Also near the Biltmore is the Wrigley Mansion
It's the place the chewing gum magnate built
He never actually ened up living there
But its completed now
And it serves as a museum
And a restaurant and a bar
As in most American cities
the people of Metro Phoenix largely abandoned the city center for many decades.
new energy and new growth is coming to Downtown Phoenix
Although not as robust as many other US cities I've visited
it is clearly happening
And as a tourist in Phoenix, it's exciting to see that.
As we explained earlier, Phoenix is Arizona's capital
I love visiting State Capitol buildings, so after a quick tour of Arizona's copper-domed
capitol
I headed South to begin the two hour drive back to Tucson
Now my friend Justin, whom you saw earlier in the video
Is NOT a fan of that long stretch of I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson
but I actually like because of the wide open spaces and desert scenery
As many of you know
I'm from the Atlantic coast of the US, which is very forested and green.
So for me, the desert Southwest is exotic! It's like being in another country
Another world even!
To illustrate, here's my drive on Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix
And here's Interstate 64 between Richmond and Norfolk in my home state of Virginia
I take this route when I visit family and as you can see, the forest nearly gobbles
up this superhighway
It succeeds in doing so on many roads near my hometown of Williamsburg
These are the highway scenes I grew up with - forest and sea
Both American scemes extremely different, and for me, both extremely beautiful.
(swoosh sound)
(wind gust sound)
It's a very windy night in Tucson tonight
It's almost blowing my light away
Both Tucson and Phoenix can be very windy and dusty
Sylvia, why is it so windy in Tucson tonight?
I feel like I'm in Chicago!
Because you blew into town!
Tonight, we are back in the city center
waiting for the start of Tucson's famous folk music festival
This section of Downtown Tucson is called the Presidio
and it's Spanish influences are obvious.
The centerpiece is the Pima County Courthouse
which is listed on America's National Register of Historic Places
I think it's cool how you can see the top of the Presidio behind us
That's the Presidio?
The whole park is the Presidio
Oh, okay
That's called the Courthouse
So you guys do you like Tucson's new courthouse
That new building there
Or the old one better?
It's near perfect weather
You know this weather in May in Tucson reminds me of the weather in Dubai in March
Where?
This last March?
Yeah, a few weeks ago
You get around
(Laughter)
Oh Lynne!
I guess you're right
I probably do get around
Probably also a great time to mention that I will be uploading a Sunny Outside Dubai
in the next few weeks.
Here are a few clips....
We'll show you the new Dubai that everybody sees.
With important tips and observations for female and LGBT travelers.
we'll also take you to the city's charming and historic waterfront
Hello everyone, I'm very excited to be on Dubai Creek, which has easily become my favorite
part of the city
And stay tuned for "It's 'Sunny' Outside San Diego"
