1 00:00:08:00 00:00:09:13 Good afternoon, everybody.
2 00:00:10:11 00:00:13:15 This morning, Secretary Napolitano announced new actions
3 00:00:13:21 00:00:15:13 my administration will take
4 00:00:15:19 00:00:18:08 to mend our nation's immigration policy
5 00:00:19:13 00:00:23:09 to make it more fair, more efficient, and more just.
6 00:00:24:06 00:00:28:03 Specifically for certain young people sometimes called Dreamers.
7 00:00:29:09 00:00:31:09 They are Americans in their heart
8 00:00:31:20 00:00:33:06 in their minds 9 00:00:33:16 00:00:36:05 in every single
way, but one: 10 00:00:37:04 00:00:38:10 On Paper.
11 00:00:38:23 00:00:40:13 Effective immediately 12 00:00:40:23 00:00:43:12 the Department
of Homeland Security is taking steps 13 00:00:43:21 00:00:47:05 to lift the shadow
of deportation from these young people. 14 00:00:48:09 00:00:50:01 Over the next few
months 15 00:00:50:10 00:00:55:15 eligible individuals
who do not present a risk to national security or public safety
16 00:00:56:04 00:01:01:04 will be able to request temporary relief from deportation
proceedings 17 00:01:01:16 00:01:03:23 and apply for work
authorization. 18 00:01:05:11 00:01:08:12 Now, let's be clear.
This is not amnesty. 19 00:01:08:22 00:01:10:10 This is not immunity.
20 00:01:11:03 00:01:13:03 This is not a path to citizenship.
21 00:01:13:18 00:01:16:02 And the answer to your question, sir
22 00:01:16:11 00:01:18:20 and the next time I prefer you let me finish my statements
23 00:01:19:02 00:01:20:16 before you ask that question
24 00:01:21:04 00:01:23:04 is this is the right thing to do for the American people.
25 00:01:24:19 00:01:27:02 I didn't ask for an argument. I'm answering your question.
26 00:01:27:15 00:01:31:10 It is the right thing to do for the American people, and here's
why 27 00:01:36:02 00:01:36:22 I believe that
28 00:01:38:07 00:01:42:10 it's the right thing to do because I've been
with groups of young people who work so hard 29 00:01:43:03 00:01:47:11 and speak with
so much heart about what's best in America. 30 00:01:47:20 00:01:52:00 Even though I knew
some of them must have lived under the fear of deportation.
31 00:01:53:06 00:01:57:18 I know some have come forward, at great risks to themselves
and their futures 32 00:01:58:13 00:02:03:23 in hopes it would
spur the rest of us to live up to our own most cherished values.
33 00:03:06:03 00:03:08:03 So it was the second or third day of school
34 00:03:09:06 00:03:11:06 that we were back from winter break
35 00:03:12:14 00:03:14:14 the teacher sent us to the library
36 00:03:15:18 00:03:17:02 to do some research 37 00:03:18:14 00:03:23:03 on this project
for government class that he had us doing 38 00:03:25:04 00:03:27:04 and then I got
a call 39 00:03:28:01 00:03:30:17 so I picked up,
and it was a woman 40 00:03:31:14 00:03:36:18 and she asked if
it was me, and I said yeah, it's me 41 00:03:37:22 00:03:41:06 and she said that
she was calling from Harvard 42 00:03:41:13 00:03:43:13 and then she paused
43 00:03:44:17 00:03:50:08 And I was about to say, ok, are you missing my transcripts
44 00:03:50:19 00:03:54:07 or are you missing maybe a letter of recommendation?
45 00:03:54:10 00:03:55:19 Maybe somebody was late?
46 00:03:56:19 00:03:58:04 So the lady said 47 00:04:00:03 00:04:02:18 the admissions
committee just reviewed your application 48 00:04:03:20 00:04:05:20 and we voted to
send you a likely letter. 49 00:04:07:08 00:04:10:13 We're gonna send
you a letter in a couple of days 50 00:04:10:21 00:04:11:16 but basically
51 00:04:14:00 00:04:17:06 we're saying this unofficially, but you're in.
52 00:04:18:07 00:04:20:07 This was January 11th
53 00:04:21:00 00:04:23:00 and my mom said that was my lucky number
54 00:04:23:21 00:04:26:23 because every time she was in the kitchen or doing whatever
55 00:04:28:08 00:04:33:09 every time she would look up, and the time would be 11:11,
coincidentally. 56 00:04:34:17 00:04:37:13 And since it was
January 11th, she said it was close enough 57 00:04:39:18 00:04:42:09 and that's why
I got in on that day. 58 00:04:43:14 00:04:46:03 — Did you cry?
— Yeah I was crying. 59 00:05:37:10 00:05:39:10 — Birthday boy!
60 00:05:40:04 00:05:42:04 — Max wants to make a sake bomb.
61 00:06:01:18 00:06:03:18 My name is Gary. 62 00:06:29:17 00:06:31:17 Honestly, I didn't
know what to think of it. 63 00:06:33:14 00:06:37:08 I came here for
Visitas and
I really didn't know what to think of it. 64 00:06:37:12 00:06:39:12 I'd never been
in Boston before. 65 00:06:43:13 00:06:45:04 It's a great place.
66 00:06:45:22 00:06:47:22 I thought it was gonna be awesome and everything
67 00:06:48:11 00:06:50:23 but it's even better than what I could have thought it could have
been. 68 00:06:51:03 00:06:53:03 I really like it.
I love it here. 69 00:06:54:12 00:06:56:05 The city itself
is kind of nice. 70 00:06:56:10 00:06:58:10 Very nice, actually.
71 00:06:59:16 00:07:02:13 You know, everyone's cool, friendly.
72 00:07:04:16 00:07:05:22 I love it. 73 00:07:14:21 00:07:16:21 I would want to
go to Guatemala 74 00:07:17:07 00:07:21:11 although that's
not always necessarily what happens or what's possible.
75 00:07:22:03 00:07:24:03 You know, visit friends and family.
76 00:07:25:21 00:07:28:13 But given the security situation in there, that's not always a given.
77 00:07:31:05 00:07:33:05 But otherwise, I'd love to go to Europe
78 00:07:33:20 00:07:35:20 for study abroad 79 00:07:36:08 00:07:39:23 country like Austria
or Italy or Switzerland. 80 00:07:41:19 00:07:43:14 I think that'd
be pretty cool. 81 00:08:38:19 00:08:40:19 — Are all the
formulas in the book? 82 00:08:41:03 00:08:43:03 — No, those two
aren't. That's what I'm saying. 83 00:08:43:23 00:08:46:08 And so the guy
was like, well, I'll just give you the formula 84 00:08:46:12 00:08:47:23 and if you can
do the problem then whatever. 85 00:08:48:03 00:08:50:03 Also know the Rule
of 70. 86 00:08:50:18 00:08:52:08 — Seventy?
87 00:08:52:23 00:08:54:23 The Rule of 70. Seventy over X.
88 00:08:56:03 00:09:00:12 — So that's how accounting works very broadly speaking
89 00:09:00:17 00:09:02:22 for an individual or for a company.
90 00:09:03:03 00:09:05:03 Now let's think about how a bank does it
91 00:09:05:21 00:09:10:08 First of all, someone who has intangibles that cannot be bought
or sold 92 00:09:10:21 00:09:14:01 might have a better
financial position even if their balance sheet looks the same.
93 00:09:21:06 00:09:23:11 — Do y'all know what a morning dove sounds like?
94 00:09:24:05 00:09:26:08 — A what? — A morning dove.
95 00:09:29:12 00:09:31:22 No. — What?
96 00:09:32:09 00:09:34:09 I
don't know, I think it sounds like 97 00:10:13:11 00:10:16:09 But like, there's
two moments in my life where I almost dropped out
98 00:10:16:14 00:10:20:10 just because my mom cleans houses and she's around
99 00:10:20:20 00:10:25:08 like I was looking up on the internet like stories about women
who clean houses their whole life 100 00:10:25:15 00:10:27:15 and like chemicals
just do *** to them. 101 00:10:27:23 00:10:29:10 So I was like,
I need to work 102 00:10:29:16 00:10:31:01 I'm not even gonna
be able to go to college. 103 00:10:31:05 00:10:32:21 I'm just wasting
this whole time. 104 00:10:33:08 00:10:35:20 Good grades aren't
gonna really do anything for me. 105 00:10:36:09 00:10:38:09 So I was just
gonna drop out and work 106 00:10:39:07 00:10:42:03 mow lawns or construction
like I did this summer. 107 00:11:40:10 00:11:42:03 I just got accepted
108 00:11:42:09 00:11:44:09 and so I got a full ride here
109 00:11:45:07 00:11:48:09 and I have a job now so I don't know, I send money home.
110 00:13:16:13 00:13:18:13 So this is my elementary school
111 00:13:18:22 00:13:20:22 and this is the little park behind it.
112 00:13:22:12 00:13:24:12 I grew up mostly around here
113 00:13:24:17 00:13:26:09 Hawthorne and Compton
114 00:13:26:14 00:13:28:14 It was pretty much evenly divided between here and there.
115 00:13:30:06 00:13:32:02 I mean, this block is basically where I went to school.
116 00:13:32:08 00:13:34:08 My elementary school and my middle school was right there
117 00:13:34:23 00:13:36:16 and Compton because even though we had moved out
118 00:13:37:00 00:13:38:07 we would always be going back there.
119 00:13:38:13 00:13:40:08 When we went to church, it was to the church in Compton.
120 00:13:40:14 00:13:42:14 When we went to my grandma's house, we went back to Compton.
121 00:13:43:01 00:13:44:23 When my brother started trying to do karate, he went to Compton.
122 00:13:45:23 00:13:50:01 The earliest I can remember is when I was about five, I want
to say, or four 123 00:13:50:15 00:13:55:00 cuz when I started
kindergarten, my mom had sat me down and told me, like
124 00:13:55:08 00:13:56:22 well, look, here's the situation:
125 00:13:57:10 00:14:00:14 we're immigrants from Mexico, you know that, but we're also
undocumented immigrants. 126 00:14:00:21 00:14:02:18 So, that means
we don't have papers. 127 00:14:02:23 00:14:05:22 That means you
have to keep it a secret from all your friends, from your teachers
128 00:14:06:03 00:14:07:05 You can't trust anybody with this
129 00:14:07:11 00:14:09:09 or else the police will come and get you from the house.
130 00:14:52:04 00:14:54:05 So I took my mom out to lunch when I told her that I had gotten
in 131 00:14:54:09 00:14:56:01 but she was still
asking me about the financial aid stuff. 132 00:14:56:06 00:14:58:06 And because they
kept asking for my dad's information 133 00:14:58:10 00:15:00:10 which I don't
have since he doesn't live with us 134 00:15:00:20 00:15:02:20 it really delayed
my application packet for a while. 135 00:15:03:14 00:15:05:14 But then, once
I eventually got it in 136 00:15:06:01 00:15:08:01 I was at home,
and my mom had been doing this, like 137 00:15:08:07 00:15:10:07 facial, like,
mask thing she does 138 00:15:11:03 00:15:13:19 not quite sure
what it is, but it's some beauty thing 139 00:15:15:23 00:15:17:23 it kinda like
hardens on your face so you can peel it off later
140 00:15:18:04 00:15:19:10 and so when I got the email later saying:
141 00:15:19:16 00:15:23:05 Ok, we finally accepted all your documents and we've processed
your information. 142 00:15:23:10 00:15:25:10 You can now check
your myHarvard account 143 00:15:25:15 00:15:28:19 and it'll have
your financial aid proposal package listed. 144 00:15:29:07 00:15:32:18 So I checked it
and so it was a solid confirmation that I had gotten a full ride
145 00:15:33:00 00:15:35:11 and so I told my mom and she was really happy but she was,
like 146 00:15:35:18 00:15:37:18 I'm really happy
but I can't move my face. 147 00:15:38:18 00:15:40:18 It just made that
moment a lot more memorable. 148 00:15:41:12 00:15:42:19 Yeah.
149 00:15:56:03 00:15:59:00 So, I came to this country when I was eight months old,
with my mom. 150 00:15:59:07 00:16:03:05 And it was because
we're from Culiacan, Sinaloa 151 00:16:03:09 00:16:06:10 which is kinda,
like, ground zero for the current Mexican Drug War
152 00:16:06:15 00:16:08:11 and all the, like, Narco violence.
153 00:16:08:20 00:16:10:12 So she said it wasn't safe for us anymore.
154 00:16:11:05 00:16:12:08 Um, we came driving. 155 00:16:12:12 00:16:15:11 So, my grandma
went to Mexico and drove my mother and I 156 00:16:15:23 00:16:17:03 to the United
States. 157 00:16:17:10 00:16:19:10 We came through
Nogales in Arizona 158 00:16:19:17 00:16:21:01 and we lived in
Arizona for a while 159 00:16:21:04 00:16:23:13 until we moved
to LA to be with my grandma. 160 00:16:24:21 00:16:26:09 Fortunately, we
didn't have that much trouble 161 00:16:26:16 00:16:28:06 because my grandma
was able to get us a Visitor's Visa 162 00:16:28:14 00:16:30:21 for both my mother
and I. 163 00:16:33:09 00:16:35:08 I don't think
my mom plans to move back to Mexico 164 00:16:35:13 00:16:39:21 anytime soon,
or probably ever, because of how bad it's gotten in our hometown
165 00:16:40:01 00:16:42:05 especially the district that she says that we lived in.
166 00:16:42:15 00:16:46:14 And even though I have family in Mexico, none of them really
know me 167 00:16:47:15 00:16:50:12 And it'll feel
very strange to just, like, drop in on them, like
168 00:16:50:19 00:16:51:21 twenty-something years later like
169 00:16:52:01 00:16:56:09 Hey, I'm the daughter of Maria
170 00:16:56:12 00:16:59:00 that kid who, like, went away when she was, like, barely
born. 171 00:16:59:04 00:17:01:04 Yeah, that's me.
172 00:17:02:02 00:17:04:02 And I wouldn't want to go back. I feel like my future is
here. 173 00:17:04:13 00:17:08:13 And if it's not
in the United States, I couldn't really see myself starting over in Mexico.
174 00:17:28:23 00:17:33:00 There is, for some countries, a wait that is so long
175 00:17:34:00 00:17:36:03 that no date is given.
176 00:17:37:03 00:17:40:19 Because it's out in the future so long you could be waiting
twenty years. 177 00:17:43:03 00:17:45:19 If the line is
twenty years long, what's the point? 178 00:18:45:20 00:18:48:21 To check the status
of an application that you have submitted 179 00:18:49:00 00:18:51:12 or to report a
problem with your application 180 00:18:51:17 00:18:52:13 press one.
181 00:18:52:22 00:18:55:10 For services and information for attorneys —
182 00:18:56:20 00:19:01:05 On September 13th, 2012
183 00:19:01:11 00:19:04:13 we received your I-821D
184 00:19:04:21 00:19:08:01 Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
185 00:19:08:07 00:19:11:08 We sent you a notice on form I-797
186 00:19:11:15 00:19:14:09 that describes how we will process your pending case:
187 00:19:14:18 00:19:18:07 ... 188 00:21:46:12 00:21:49:03 I just remember
being inside the van that came here 189 00:21:49:09 00:21:51:09 and I remember...
190 00:21:53:10 00:21:55:10 not a lot. 191 00:21:56:07 00:21:59:10 I remember we
lived in a really small, it was smaller than this.
192 00:21:59:13 00:22:02:06 It was a small trailer down on the other side of the city.
193 00:22:07:00 00:22:08:19 We didn't have air conditioning or anything
194 00:22:08:23 00:22:10:10 and I remember having to
195 00:22:10:23 00:22:15:10 like, they would put a big pot and fill it up with hot water
196 00:22:15:14 00:22:18:04 and then fill up the bathtub and kind of carry it every
morning. 197 00:22:18:18 00:22:20:19 — We had a cup
that you had to pour it on. — Yeah.
198 00:22:20:22 00:22:22:04 — On yourself. Yeah.
199 00:22:26:02 00:22:28:02 Yeah. It was good times.
200 00:22:29:05 00:22:32:05 When I came up here just to visit
201 00:22:32:22 00:22:35:13 and I saw that it was a better place
202 00:22:36:19 00:22:37:19 then I asked myself 203 00:22:38:04 00:22:39:20 What do I want
for my family? 204 00:22:40:02 00:22:44:03 And I said, well,
here is better than there. 205 00:22:44:20 00:22:46:10 So I think I want
this. 206 00:22:46:17 00:22:51:15 And we had the
chance to come up here and we did. 207 00:22:52:19 00:22:54:19 And then I brought
the family and I said 208 00:22:54:21 00:22:56:21 Come and see this
country, it's so nice. 209 00:22:57:09 00:23:00:13 And then my brothers
in law told me that 210 00:23:00:20 00:23:03:22 there was a way
to get a job over here 211 00:23:05:16 00:23:08:04 and it was a real
job 212 00:23:08:19 00:23:10:19 with real money
and all that. 213 00:23:11:13 00:23:13:13 And then I didn't
go back. 214 00:23:13:19 00:23:15:19 It was so good.
215 00:23:18:19 00:23:20:01 Um... 216 00:23:20:12 00:23:23:14 I didn't know
any English. I remember in Pre-K this girl that knew
217 00:23:23:20 00:23:26:00 like, three English words was really cool, cuz...
218 00:23:27:00 00:23:28:16 And I remember I would come
219 00:23:28:22 00:23:30:14 this is kind of embarrassing, I've never said this.
220 00:23:31:03 00:23:34:04 I remember before I would get in the shower, like
221 00:23:34:09 00:23:37:07 when I was getting dressed I would look at myself in the mirror
and, like 222 00:23:37:14 00:23:41:06 just say random
words that would sound like English 223 00:23:41:10 00:23:43:10 and just like
pretend I knew English. 224 00:23:43:20 00:23:45:20 I knew like three
words. 225 00:24:29:21 00:24:34:02 I remember one day a pair of Mormon missionaries
came 226 00:24:34:09 00:24:38:22 and knocked at
our old house we used to live in on the other side of Dickinson.
227 00:24:39:11 00:24:40:21 And they invited us to church.
228 00:24:40:23 00:24:43:05 And we actually didn't go but they kept insisting.
229 00:24:43:15 00:24:44:22 So one day we showed up
230 00:24:46:12 00:24:50:17 and everyone had a good experience so we decided to come back
the next Sunday. 231 00:24:50:21 00:24:52:05 And we just kept
coming back. 232 00:24:52:08 00:24:55:19 And eventually
we were baptized 233 00:24:56:00 00:24:59:11 and we went through
the processes. 234 00:25:19:16 00:25:23:22 So this is the
top twenty graduates of my sister's class which is
235 00:25:24:06 00:25:26:06 one year, she was one year ahead of me.
236 00:25:27:13 00:25:28:23 Well she is. 237 00:25:29:09 00:25:32:11 And... she is...
238 00:25:32:16 00:25:36:06 wearing the gray t-shirt almost the last one. She's right here.
239 00:25:37:05 00:25:40:08 So you remember more than I do, right? About everything.
240 00:25:40:23 00:25:42:17 Yeah, I remember coming.
241 00:25:42:22 00:25:46:23 I remember when we were driving we drove away from the ranch
where we lived 242 00:25:47:05 00:25:48:13 and then we came
in a big van. 243 00:25:48:14 00:25:50:04 And when we went
through the border 244 00:25:50:08 00:25:52:17 they checked us
and we all had to go out of the van 245 00:25:52:21 00:25:57:10 and all the security
people trying to search everything. 246 00:25:58:00 00:26:00:06 And I think you
and Daniel were crying. 247 00:26:00:13 00:26:02:09 — How are you
paying for college now? 248 00:26:04:19 00:26:06:18 — UT offered
me enough scholarships to pay my tuition for every year.
250 00:26:10:11 00:26:12:01 For my four years. 251 00:26:12:15 00:26:13:23 But so far it's
been pretty good. 252 00:26:14:01 00:26:16:16 I haven't needed
any money from my parents 253 00:26:16:20 00:26:18:20 so they're happy
about that. 254 00:26:19:07 00:26:23:12 That's cool. That's
crazy, though, I would have no time to apply to any scholarships.
255 00:26:23:18 00:26:27:20 I'm so glad I got into, or got a full scholarship
256 00:26:28:02 00:26:29:10 because that's insane.
257 00:26:30:03 00:26:32:03 I can't even. — Yeah.
258 00:26:32:17 00:26:36:08 These are very much school related policies
259 00:26:37:00 00:26:43:05 as well as tied to funding that schools get from the federal
government. 260 00:26:43:17 00:26:46:13 So if they are
getting certain kinds of funding from that 261 00:26:46:17 00:26:50:18 now, probably
what's happening with Harvard is the Harvard endowment is so large
262 00:26:50:20 00:26:55:09 that they may not have to take a lot of federal assistance.
263 00:26:55:15 00:26:57:15 I doubt they do. 264 00:27:05:18 00:27:09:02 Undocumented are
ineligible for almost all services. 265 00:27:09:07 00:27:12:03 They're ineligible
for most federal benefits. 266 00:27:13:02 00:27:15:02 — People live
regular lives 267 00:27:15:06 00:27:18:14 and if you go
almost anywhere in this country 268 00:27:18:17 00:27:21:05 you will find
undocumented people everywhere 269 00:27:21:09 00:27:23:22 in all kinds of
jobs, in all kinds of situations. 270 00:27:25:11 00:27:27:19 But the DREAM
Act was designed 271 00:27:29:11 00:27:35:22 to give legal
status to a particular subset of the undocumented population
272 00:27:36:06 00:27:38:12 And there have been different versions of it over the years
273 00:27:38:18 00:27:43:03 but roughly speaking it's people who have come here as young children
274 00:27:43:06 00:27:46:10 who have lived pretty exemplary lives.
275 00:27:46:13 00:27:50:15 Most versions of the DREAM Act have not been open
276 00:27:50:16 00:27:53:10 to people who have had any criminal records or anything
like that. 277 00:27:53:13 00:27:56:00 People who speak
English, who have attended schools 278 00:27:56:02 00:27:58:02 who have done
well in this country 279 00:27:58:04 00:28:01:22 and who, by most
measures, you would say 280 00:28:02:03 00:28:04:18 are Americans
in every aspect 281 00:28:04:21 00:28:08:06 except, as I think
the president himself even said at one point 282 00:28:08:10 00:28:11:04 except having
the documentation to prove it. 283 00:28:11:19 00:28:16:05 Now, the president's
order was actually a much more limited thing 284 00:28:16:08 00:28:17:12 than the DREAM
Act. 285 00:28:17:18 00:28:19:18 Really quite a
limited benefit 286 00:28:20:03 00:28:21:14 objectively speaking.
287 00:28:22:00 00:28:24:00 It just would say to people that
288 00:28:24:21 00:28:26:01 for a short period of time
289 00:28:26:10 00:28:28:16 We, the Government of the United States
290 00:28:28:18 00:28:30:11 Will agree not to Deport you.
291 00:28:59:12 00:29:02:17 I, Barak Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear
292 00:29:02:22 00:29:04:22 — I, Barak Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear
293 00:29:05:09 00:29:07:09 — Well done. 294 00:29:11:05 00:29:14:13 Our journey is
not complete until we find a better way to welcome
295 00:29:14:18 00:29:19:18 the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as
a land of opportunity. 296 00:29:25:03 00:29:27:03 Hello. I'm Dario.
297 00:29:27:06 00:29:29:21 — Hi. Oh you have the letter.
— Yeah, the letter, please. 298 00:29:33:03 00:29:35:03 From my dean.
299 00:29:37:11 00:29:40:21 Basically explaining that I'm going this summer to Mexico
300 00:29:41:20 00:29:45:23 and that I need, or that it would be very beneficial
301 00:29:46:03 00:29:47:05 to me 302 00:29:47:13 00:29:49:06 if I could be
granted Advanced Parole. 303 00:29:49:13 00:29:50:08 — Advanced Parole?
304 00:29:50:10 00:29:52:03 Yeah, so I can travel
305 00:29:52:06 00:29:56:03 you know, leave the country for educational purposes.
306 00:29:56:10 00:30:00:02 So this is my, I guess the evidence that I'm sending in with
my application 307 00:30:00:05 00:30:02:00 and my four hundred
dollars and my 308 00:30:03:05 00:30:05:05 all this information
about my identity. 309 00:30:06:18 00:30:10:04 So the Department
of Homeland Security or whatever, Immigration — Right.
310 00:30:10:16 00:30:13:19 can rest easy 311 00:30:14:06 00:30:16:17 knowing that I'm
not gonna run drugs. 312 00:30:17:14 00:30:19:07 So now that I
can work 313 00:30:19:15 00:30:21:01 and I have an
ID 314 00:30:21:13 00:30:23:22 and I can get
a license soon — Yup.
315 00:30:25:00 00:30:26:10 now I can travel. 316 00:31:09:10 00:31:12:10 I started driving
when I was a freshman 317 00:31:13:23 00:31:17:01 cuz there was
this class called seminary for my church 318 00:31:17:13 00:31:21:02 and it started
at six in the morning so my dad never wanted to wake up to take me.
319 00:31:21:15 00:31:23:11 So that's when he decided to teach me.
320 00:31:26:03 00:31:27:22 I don't know, this is kind of embarrassing to say.
321 00:31:28:04 00:31:32:21 I was driving down California Street and the speed limit
was 322 00:31:33:11 00:31:34:18 thirty or something.
323 00:31:34:21 00:31:37:15 And Cynthia was calling me and she really needed to go somewhere.
She was like 324 00:31:37:17 00:31:39:10 Hurry up, where
are you? Where'd you go? 325 00:31:39:11 00:31:41:11 I think I went
without permission or anything. 326 00:31:43:23 00:31:47:05 So I was speeding
back and there was a police officer right there
327 00:31:47:16 00:31:50:00 and I didn't see him until it was too late cuz it was completely
dark 328 00:31:50:03 00:31:52:03 and you know how
they hide and everything. 329 00:31:53:20 00:31:55:22 Well, I don't
know, in Dickinson, I guess. 330 00:31:56:14 00:31:57:16 I was right here
and I was like 331 00:31:57:19 00:32:00:02 I know my neighborhood
way better than this cop does. 332 00:32:01:19 00:32:03:15 Like he's turned
around 333 00:32:03:19 00:32:06:06 he would have
to make a u-turn in this very narrow street 334 00:32:07:10 00:32:09:12 and it'd be a
really cool story to tell 335 00:32:09:16 00:32:11:02 like if I could
get away from a cop. 336 00:32:12:15 00:32:14:11 Above all, it
was that I'm undocumented 337 00:32:14:11 00:32:17:03 I have no idea
what will happen to me or my family. 338 00:32:17:12 00:32:20:11 Like I've heard
of kids getting deported, like their entire family
339 00:32:20:12 00:32:22:12 cuz like one kid screws up.
340 00:32:23:22 00:32:25:17 So I had this whole entire fear
341 00:32:26:17 00:32:28:10 I mean I had thought about it before
342 00:32:28:13 00:32:32:11 What would happen if I get pulled over cuz I've driven for,
like, years before that. 343 00:32:33:19 00:32:39:07 But I think like,
I just started like trying to get away from the police officer
344 00:32:40:03 00:32:43:11 I turned off my lights to make myself less visible
345 00:32:46:15 00:32:48:14 so I just tried to run away.
346 00:32:50:04 00:32:52:11 I was just so scared. I think that was the lowest point.
347 00:32:53:11 00:32:56:13 Having all of the pressures of being undocumented mounted
into one. 348 00:33:03:10 00:33:06:18 — That happened
to be the most 349 00:33:06:23 00:33:07:22 evil officer ever.
— Oh yeah, he was really mean. 350 00:33:08:02 00:33:10:13 He was really
mean. 351 00:33:10:15 00:33:13:13 — Well, I mean
I understand that I tried to like, run away from him but he was...
352 00:33:13:21 00:33:17:22 He tried to act really bad cop.
353 00:33:18:10 00:33:23:18 And he put the handcuffs.
— He like put his handcuffs on me and left me like behind his car
354 00:33:25:00 00:33:27:04 — like on the trunk of his car for a long time.
— And he told him, 355 00:33:27:06 00:33:31:02 Ima take you to
jail and you're gonna stay there forever. 356 00:33:31:05 00:33:33:19 And all that thing
and Enrique was so scared. 357 00:33:34:14 00:33:39:06 And then he had
to go to court. 358 00:33:39:20 00:33:41:20 And the officer
didn't show up. 359 00:33:42:04 00:33:45:19 — The officer
didn't show up that day... — So he was clean again.
360 00:33:45:20 00:33:48:02 — I had no case and he was just like, you're free to go.
361 00:33:48:18 00:33:52:16 — And he had learned a lesson in the worst way possible.
362 00:33:52:18 00:33:57:01 With that terrible officer. Maybe that officer knew what he was
doing... 363 00:34:08:21 00:34:10:21 This is what it'll
look like. 364 00:34:11:16 00:34:13:20 So - I don't know
if I want to put this in front of the camera, but
365 00:34:20:22 00:34:22:14 — Keep that safe.
366 00:34:23:00 00:34:26:06 Yeah. I signed it and then it smeared so I was kinda pissed.
367 00:34:26:15 00:34:28:22 Yeah, this is the last time I got rejected.
368 00:34:29:09 00:34:32:22 Well, like, it's not rejected. It's just that I didn't have
a document I needed. 369 00:34:33:08 00:34:35:08 So I was applying
for a learner's permit. 370 00:34:35:19 00:34:37:07 But right here
it says that 371 00:34:37:11 00:34:41:09 Your application
has been rejected because you did not meet the requirement for
372 00:34:44:13 00:34:47:03 I don't know, that looks like it says passport. I-20.
373 00:34:49:07 00:34:51:15 This guy has super messy handwriting. I have no idea what that
says. 374 00:34:51:21 00:34:53:21 But I just remember
he said I need an I-20 form. 375 00:34:54:16 00:34:59:03 So it's like a
work, or a... I don't know. 376 00:35:01:05 00:35:03:05 This is the thing
I had to go get. 377 00:35:04:16 00:35:06:14 Like, it said
where I live and stuff. 378 00:35:06:18 00:35:08:18 That I lived on
Harvard campus. 379 00:35:09:23 00:35:11:13 — Can you let
me see it? 380 00:35:31:03 00:35:35:16 I'm gonna go see
if I can apply for a license. 381 00:35:37:00 00:35:40:21 I've gone like
three times and each time they tell me I need a new document
382 00:35:41:00 00:35:44:15 but hopefully this time I have enough.
383 00:36:07:10 00:36:10:21 And I have two letters from the Department of Homeland Security
384 00:36:11:06 00:36:13:18 US Citizenship and Immigration Services
385 00:36:15:06 00:36:19:04 hopefully they have something to do with my Advanced Parole
application 386 00:36:20:02 00:36:20:20 hopefully
387 00:36:21:03 00:36:22:03 they are 388 00:36:22:04 00:36:22:19 letters
389 00:36:23:00 00:36:25:23 letting me know that I've been granted Advanced Parole
390 00:36:26:02 00:36:27:19 so I can travel! 391 00:36:40:00 00:36:42:16 My mom applied
for citizenship through my grandma 392 00:36:42:19 00:36:44:19 so she applied
as an adult daughter of a citizen. 393 00:36:45:15 00:36:47:15 We applied in
1996. 394 00:36:48:20 00:36:50:17 So it's been quite
a while 395 00:36:50:17 00:36:53:10 but, I mean I've
heard that twenty years is like the average 396 00:36:53:11 00:36:55:11 for these sort
of cases to go through. 397 00:36:58:09 00:37:02:04 Mine was turned
in mid-September 398 00:37:02:09 00:37:05:11 so at the latest,
I'm waiting for it mid-March. 399 00:37:05:16 00:37:07:16 And I haven't
gotten any updates. 400 00:37:08:12 00:37:11:12 So hopefully that'll
come by soon. 401 00:37:11:19 00:37:16:11 — Please stay
on the line. We are now accessing the information for your case.
402 00:37:23:08 00:37:25:21 I'm here today because the time has come
