Hi. I'm Dr. John Fritz, and I'm going to talk to you a little bit about heel spurs. What
is a heal spur? A heal spur is a bony growth on the bottom of the heal. It is a radiographic
finding. Heel spurs normally don't hurt.
Heel spurs unfortunately are commonly confused with plantar fasciitis. The reason it's commonly
confused is it's cited in literature as "heel spur syndrome." It's commonly used by professionals
to describe their pain to patients.
Heel spurs are normal. They occur in 15% of the population and as high as 50% of the population
over 50. Even though heel spurs may be associated with plantar fasciitis, they do not cause
pain and they do not need to be removed.
