>> Last night suspected drunk driver plowed through a crowd of people enjoying the SXSW
festivities, killing two and injuring more than twenty. Police say that they had attempted
to pull the driver over after he allegedly tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint. The driver
fled and turned onto Red River, crashing through several barriers and into the crowd. The street
had been closed to keep those attending SXSW concerts safe. The driver struck two people
on a moped, several pedestrians, a van, and a taxi before stopping his vehicle and attempting
to flee on foot. Officers were able to apprehend the man and have him in custody. The two individuals
on the moped – a man and a woman – were both pronounced dead at the scene. Of the
twenty-three others who were injured, five of those people were listed in critical condition.
Police are saying the driver will be charged with two counts of capital *** – an offense
in Texas, which makes him eligible for the death penalty, and 23 counts of aggravated
assault with a vehicle.
>>Police chief Art Acevedo said, “There is only one person responsible for this, someone
with no regard for the sanctity of human life. Our focus is on gathering evidence and seeking
justice for the people who lost their lives.” Let’s pull the curtain back for just a second
– this story honestly breaks my heart. Not only because it happened in my hometown or
because it happened at a festival I grew up around and have attending myself. It breaks
my heart because it is entirely preventable. It’s ridiculously simple, guys: if you put
a bev in your hand, put your keys in someone else’s. Driving under the influence is one
of the most selfish, heartless things you could possibly do and it’s not just your
life you could destroy – but the lives of many people who will never be the same. My
heart aches for those affected and their families and thoughts, prayers, light vibes, whatever
you feel comfortable doing, please send them to those in this situation who need it, too.
Alright guys curtain back up thanks for joining us on SourceFed I’m Meg Turney Be safe out
there.
